Meet Kandi Robinson of The Audio Plugz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kandi Robinson.

Hi Kandi , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
From learning to play the piano at the age of five, to writing my first song, I’ve continued to evolve into one of the leading writers of music in the industry. Hailing out of Atlanta, GA, my persistence, hard work, and humbleness has landed me various opportunities and placements with some of the greats in the industry. From performing with country great Lee Greenwood to obtaining placements with Power, Grey’s Anatomy, Dance Moms, Nashville, Whole Foods, Timberland, Disney, Nickelodeon and more…

About 10+ years ago, I started a company called THE AUDIO PLUGZ. The Audio Plugz is a highly sought-after music supervision, music production, music publishing, and music licensing company based in Kennesaw, GA. The Audio Plugz have secured a numerous amount of major and indie TV/Film/Advertisement placements such as “Spongbob the Movie”, “Sinister 2”, “Lacoste”, “Wendy’s”, and “Pocky” in the USA as well as Internationally. Kandi is currently music directing a stage play, music supervising a short film, an indie movie, 2 indie TV shows, a documentary and also doing the sound design for two mobile app-based video game.

About 9 years prior to starting The Audio Plugz, I was a part of a songwriting team called Ink World Music for a few years. It consisted of myself and 3 others. Within this team, I really learned a lot about the business and I honed in on my songwriting as well as my audio engineering skills. We created a lot of songs and we got a slew of TV/Film placements together. Crazy thing though is that none of them lived in Georgia. They all were located in various places within the USA. And honestly, each member played an important part of my growth, I probably wouldn’t be as far as I am now.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road! Over the years I’ve heard so many no’s vs yes’s that it became severely depressing and there were many times that I just wanted to give up. It has also been very discouraging as a female in the industry as well. In a male-dominated industry, I was often looked over for gigs or opportunities/placements as if I wasn’t good enough or they claimed that I didn’t know enough, tho I was highly qualified. I also know the phrase “starving artist” all too well…even though I wasn’t a performing artist when I was just getting seasoned, I went through a period of being homeless and living in studios. So trust when I say, this definitely isn’t the industry for you if you are weak.

I also do want to give credit to all the people that have helped me along the way, whether it was free studio time, gas money, food to eat, a place to stay, believing in me and even the numerous amounts of honest advice that was given.
