Today we’d like to introduce you to Keion Williams.
Keion Williams was born in Miami, Florida on Nov 4, 2005, at 22 weeks, 1lb 9 ounces. (Our little miracle) He has been a fighter since day one. He stayed in the hospital for five months, two surgeries on both eyes, surgery on his heart and on his stomach and was sent home finally after reaching 5 lbs. Keion was a little fighter while visiting several types of specialist daily from neurologist, gastroenterologist, cardiologist and many others and growing stronger every day. He was later diagnosed with Cerebral palsy and said he would not walk or talk.
In 2008 Keion and his family moved to Mcdonough, GA where he was referred on the Babies Cant Wait Program. At the age of 2, Keion was Pervasive developmental disorder or PDD a form of autism, aspergers, and ADHD. This started our journey with treatment, therapy and more praying.
Keion later started school at Ola Elementary where we met our angels Missie McEarchern Bause and LaChandra Stodghill. These two women helped him for several years to learn and get adjusted while in Elementary school. Keion of went through several years of speech and occupational therapy to learn or to walk and talk. We later met Dawn Mathis who joined “Team Keion” with no hesitation. All 3 of these women helped our family to mold Keion into the your man he is today. They never give up on him, always encouraged him and made things easy for our family.
Fast forward to the age of 11. We quickly learned Keion had the gift of gab, he loves to talk. He has a heart of gold and will help anyone he feels needs his help. He interviewed to be apart of a kids talk show called Young Atlanta Lit and got the part. This was the beginning of Kickin it With Keion. He would later go on to hosting events and hanging out with some of Atlanta’s coolest young KIDpreneurs.
Keion then decided after meeting so many wonderful people on his journey that he wanted to help out other kids. With that Keion Cares was born. Keion gets donations from all over and creates care packages for other kids with Autism and kids in hospitals during holidays. He feels all kids should be able to enjoy their birthdays and holidays even if they have to be in the hospital. Keion will warm your heart watching him give back and how he treats people.
Keion has been bullied for being different but never let that effect how he treats other people.
Kristina Haury (teacher) said “I wanted to let you know that Keion warmed my heart today. A girl in our 4th period was crying after getting her feelings hurt. Keion comforted her and showed her his voice recorder that makes funny sounds to make her smile. It was precious! What a caring boy you are raising!”
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being in business and is school is rough. Keion is still a kid and wants to just be a kid at times and as a parent I let him. This is fun and great when a child wants to give back to the community but I still believe in letting a kid be a kid. But he gets up and will stuff a bag or go out to feed a family or drop off donations and still loves it.
Please tell us about Kickin it With Keion.
Keion Cares is an organization ran by kids for kids. We collect books, pencils, toys, snacks, and other cool and fun stuff to make care packages for kids in hospitals and kids with needs.
This is my way of giving back and helping out. Keion loves to put a smile on your face or see a kid faces when they get a package.
Keion says he’s just like everyone else. Everyone wants to help ad you have to find your way of doing it. I am proud that my mom helps me and its something we can do together. We don’t have a lot of money but we get donations and make kids smile. Im am happy to help because people helped me.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I remember when my Papa Frank would wait for me to get off the bus in elementary school. He died when I was little. But he would say that was his job and he liked doing it. It would just be me and him until mom got home. he didn’t care I was different and we played video games together.
