Meet Kelly Daniels of Cosmic Creativ in Westside

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Daniels.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
All my life, I’ve considered myself an artist – I’ve lived my life drawing, painting, and creating. In college, I fell in love with the scale of creativity in architecture. For me, architecture is art on a much larger, more technical scale. It’s was a perfect fit. In 2009, I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Florida A&M University with a double bachelor in Architecture and Architectural Science. But after working for large firms for a number of years, I wanted more… more independence & definitely more creativity.

In 2012 I started a business that would become Cosmic Creativ, where I specialize in branding, art, and architecture. Through this business, I’m beyond fortunate to flex all my creative muscles. While high-end contemporary art has pushed its way to the forefront of my life, it’s the consistent design & creative work that’s been the bedrock of my business. Hand drawn architectural renderings are still some of my favorite things to do, I find it oh so relaxing. Graphic & website design, hand painted pet portraits, and architectural design are all creative outlets for me that have become the building blocks of my business… it’s really all so serendipitous.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While the life of an entrepreneur is long & winding enough, the life of an artist can feel like a joke! Art is completely subjective, and the value of art is emotional. The business of art doesn’t come naturally to artists, it’s just not the way we’re wired… learning to value my work is something I’ve learned little by little, and comes only with confidence – confidence in your art, but more so in your business.

As artists, it’s more important to us to make a living doing what we love than it is to make a living. The highs in creative success are out of this world, but that kind of unwavering passion & dedication is the only way to survive the slow periods that are sure to be speckled in between. For me & my business, artistic diversification has been my bread & butter. It’s kept me creatively challenged, proud, and busy – which really feels like success to me.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Cosmic Creativ – what should we know?
Cosmic Creativ has steadily grown year after year, but it’s my geode inspired contemporary fine art (made of quartz crystal, crushed stone, layered resin & mixed medium) that’s really launched my business into the community. I’ve always loved the beauty of a polished gemstone, and these pieces truly are gems. Seven of my geode inspired fluid art pieces are on display (& for sale) at Unicorn Teahouse in Buckhead, where I’m the official artist & curator. That collaboration has been a great opportunity for me- I was asked to create beautiful custom geode pieces for the new vegan teahouse, had complete control over their display in the space, & it’s become my own little gallery space in the city!

Artistic diversification has been important for the success of my business over the years: Hand drawn architectural renderings for realtors to give as closing gifts, for builders/developers to pre-sell their projects, or just to memorialize an important home in your life. Architectural design services. Comprehensive branding strategies such as logo & website design, business cards design, stationary, pamphlets, expo booth design, even product design. And pet portraits! Pet portraits are what launched my business, these babies are painted from your favorite pet photos and are certainly a special part of my business. Crazy dog people are the best! Trust me, I know haha!

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I’m coming up on the 6 year anniversary of Cosmic Creativ and when I think of what’s made me most successful, I’d say it’s really is about passion & dedication. Growing my business has felt like a test of my passion for art & my dedication as a business owner. It’s hard to sell art. You need both to succeed.
