Meet Kendal ‘Scifi’ Melton of DopeBag in Southside

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendal ‘Scifi’ Melton.

Kendal ‘Scifi’, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve started the idea of starting my own clothing brand mid-2016 when I was in high school. It was hard coming up with names for my company, but I’ve knew it had to be something that represents me. I knew it had to stand out from others and I had to have a really great meaning. So after I graduate high school in May 2017, I’ve decided why not called it DopeBag.

The word DopeBag connects with me because when I was a little girl, I was more less fortunate than my big brother Chris. He would always have the nice name brand clothes and I didn’t have as many decent clothes. So I made a promise to myself when I get older I would have the dopest clothes on at all times with a huge money bag. DopeBag Clothes are to make an individual feel Unique and cool Within themselves, to have confidence no matter the clothes you have on. So June 2017, I’ve did a test trial to see if the public would approve on my items I was going to sell. It went pretty well; so I knew then I had to have dates and start planning for the bigger goal to launch my brand. I was having so many hard times trying to find everything I wanted to sell plus financial-problems it took me months to get things in order.

I’ve didn’t get back on track until that August 2017 when I started my freshman year of college. Still didn’t have a for sure launch date but I know you was getting closer to it cause I’ve had it all planned out. So September came and I had all my items and I’ve had my photoshoot done so everything can be professional. I’ve had the shoot and the products stocked up. I was happy and super nervous I was still contemplating on the launch date. So September 20 came and I’ve just got over my emotion and took faith and planned for it to drop September 22, 2017, at 12:00 noon. It was a life-changing experience when I launch my clothing brand. I prayed continuously for my brand to be successful. During the first week, I received one order and it had me kind of down and scared because I had got many people to help promote within the two day drop time also before the date was set. So I continued to pray that I get customers and sells everyday. The following week, I’ve got the most sells well I sold out of every item. It was tremendous. I’ve made 70% back in profit.

So over the next few months, things was good for business, the orders and sells was steady. My mother kept telling me your business doing good baby girl its going to get even bigger in due time, so gone and get it trademark, it been a good three month, you’re running a million dollar company. So five months in I’ve decided to listen and take action. I’ve went and applied for DopeBag to be trademark. So that took 2-3months to be finalized. And it was an error. I didn’t understand lawyer or trademark information, & it was a mistake in my trademark and took me through so many loopholes or setbacks. At that time I was still producing get items for my clothing line, & I hit rock bottom due to family crisis & personal issues. Ten months in I’ve hired an attorney, to figure the issue out. There was a major issue. I was in the bind that eventually I can be sued by a bigger clothing brand than my self because their name was similar. I was confused, cause no company name DopeBag, but It Had Dope In It. So just by that One Word, It impacted me Hard. I’ve got depressed and worried cause I’ve dedicated so much to my brand, it my child. So a week with pass and I had to do a lot of thinking should I just stop my clothing line?, something I love or should I find a way.

So I continue to work with the attorney and changed my Brand to Scifi DopeBag, and. He said it would work perfectly. I couldn’t just give everything up cause a stomp in the road. I’ve chose that because I am Scifi. That the name I usually prefer or go by; and it would be a good fit because it is my clothing brand. I’ve put that behind me and I had a great one year anniversary. I’ve started selling out items even more since then, reaching out to a bigger audience. Just a couple of days after I got my first 3 out of state Orders. That hardship was just a test from God to see was I really passionate about it. So I just pray everyday and every month and a half I try to come out with new items. I’ve stayed humble through the entire process of being a business owner so far it’s very difficult at times, it a learning process. Right now things are going smoothly for me still in the process of handling legal things, Finalized date very soon. Also, I got a bigger audience and I have built trust to have loyal customers and expanded my clientele. I’m satisfied on where I’m at right now in business, and very thankful for what led me up to where I am now to learn from my hard times alto know that 1-2 years from now it going to be a multi-billionaire company that started from the thought of having better clothes to be cool.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been so smooth, but I can say it been more smooth the bumpy. Some struggles I always had is spending my profits. That the major loss is spending profit cause that build your company to see how you grown. I always had a major hick up with my legal issues. I struggle with keep pushing and not giving up even when I was confused about what name I’ve got to decide on when I already dedicate everything to the name DopeBag itself. Prayed, I sat and contemplating on it for days until I’ve over came it.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with DopeBag – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
