Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristina Mills.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I grew up in California surrounded by so many creative industries which lead me to a career in dance at the young age of 3. In that world, you learn to become comfortable with hair and makeup very quickly! Eventually, I learned it was a way to express myself outside of dance. Friends started to ask me to do their hair and makeup for different performances and events. I soon learned that the beauty industry was more than just a creative outlet; it was a real passion I wanted to pursue further. After high school, I decided to attend Paul Mitchell the hair academy in downtown San Diego. Shortly after graduating I moved to Atlanta. I spent the next ten years behind the chair, even working for one of the most prestigious salons in the world. My career just really took off after that. In 2018 I had the exciting opportunity to expand my career to include cosmetic tattooing. It has been such a wonderful and organic transition and being a business owner has fulfilled me in ways I couldn’t imagine possible.
Please tell us about your art.
I’ve always been a Jane-of-all beauty trades. After over a decade in the industry, I was able to hone in on the services I really loved. I ended up crafting a business that would allow me to add to cosmetic tattooing services. I teamed up with Liberty Tattoo in Atlanta and started performing microblading, powder brows, combination brows and lip blushing services. My friends at Coleman Alexander Salon recently opened up a chair for me there so I could start offering brow shaping, brow tinting, lash lifts, and lash tinting in a relaxing salon setting. I also offer freelance services for special occasion hair and makeup.
My best advice to people interested in these services would be to find an artist who is truly passionate about their art. I live and breathe this lifestyle, and in doing so, I wanted to create a space where my wonderful clients felt that genuine passion. I don’t take it lightly when someone hires me to provide them a service. Most of these events are once in a lifetime moments, and my biggest hope is that I’m able to make my clients feel comfortable and confident during these exciting times.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
Living in such a digital world, it’s allowed an artist to really put themselves out there. It’s so simple to share your work with the world but with that convenience comes the need to compare. It’s easy to get wrapped up in who’s doing what and how it’s better than your own art. I encourage other artists to try and use these amazing platforms as inspiration rather than a place that makes you question yourself. I have so many talented friends in the industry and never have I felt like their success meant I was less than. Instead, we’ve gotten together for brainstorming sessions, creative photo shoots, and just overall camaraderie. By surrounding yourself with other
successful creatives, you are only allowing yourself growth while encouraging others in their own journey. It’s just good karma all around.
