Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Merriweather.
Leah, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In 2007, I left the world of Engineering to pursue my online businesses full time. I started two product based ecommerce businesses and I dove deeply in the scope of the digital world to learn how to grow these businesses online. I experienced several years of a business boom, until the dot com crash of 2012. The dot com crash was a huge shake up for ecommerce businesses. It is when Google changed their algorithms, which affected the search positions of thousands of ecommerce businesses across the globe. Mine was one of them.
Imagine going from your business doubling in revenue, year after year, to laying off your team in a matter of a couple of months – not a good look. It was devastating. I do believe there was room and opportunity to bounce back, but I didn’t take that route. I spiraled into a depression that changed the course of my life in many ways. Not only did I lose my business, but my marriage was failing as well.
As part of my growth during the booming times, I was an avid reader of personal development books and I began to practice yoga from time to time. I read a book titled The Master Key, by Charles Haanel. In the book, Haanel suggested practicing meditation every day for at least ten minutes. So, I did. I would go into my closet, close my eyes every day and breathe. I had no idea what I was doing and I had no idea what to expect. I fought every thought tooth and nail and at times, I would become completely frustrated with myself, but I kept on practicing.
What I did not know then that I know now is my introduction to yoga and meditation was preparing me for what was to come – the hard times. When the dot com crash interrupted my abundant flow of living (so I thought), it was yoga, meditation, mindfulness and energy healing that helped carry me through the tough times.
After the crash, I took a few years off in sabbatical. Well, I was not completely isolated from people, but a sabbatical for me was a leave of absence from the hustle and grind into stillness. I closed my ecommerce stores and took on a few clients to provide to them what I learned to grow my businesses – digital marketing strategies, workshops and services – to keep my ends met.
During my sabbatical, or what some would call the Dark Night of the Soul, I began to seek and see a deeper meaning to life. I dove deeply into my practice of yoga, meditation and mindfulness to experience a deep awakening of why I’m here on this Earth and what I had come here to do. A couple of years, many studies and a few certifications later, Yoga from Scratch (YFS) was born.
I founded YFS to educate people on the benefits of including yoga into their lives, to help them to remove abundance blocks through energy healing and to educate them on a deeper perspective of how simple daily techniques can literally transform a person from suffering to thriving.
I’m a very athletic person and I’ve always been into working out and staying in shape from cardio and weight training practices, so yoga to me was a child’s play, you know, all stretching and relaxing and wimpy stuff?? Goodness, was I wrong!! Might I add – I knew nothing about the benefits of energy work and healing. When I began practicing yoga over a decade ago, I didn’t know how I could change. I didn’t know what all the woo-woo talk about body, mind and spirit was and how moving energy through the body could promote a happier life – hence, altering your state of mind and consciousness.
Today, I am the living testament of this way of life, so I decided to share it. I am living out my passion as a certified yoga, meditation and mindfulness guide and energy healing practitioner. I am here to help people release the blocks that’s holding them back and to help people take agency of their lives by tapping into their internal power source so that they, too, can live a life abundant in health, love and joy.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A smooth road to me is strictly by perspective. Things can be as wonky or as smooth as you perceive them to be. I’ve had many bumps and challenges on this road of becoming a different aspect of myself. Through mindfulness, breath work and other yoga practices, I’ve used these tools to help see the road more smoothly.
Please tell us about your work.
Yoga from Scratch is a company designed to enhance the culture of people and companies through the practices of yoga and energy medicine. As a certified yoga, meditation and mindfulness guide and energy healing practitioner. I am here to help people release the blocks that are holding them back and to help people take agency of their lives by tapping into their internal power source so that they can live a life abundant in health, love and happiness. Our services are designed for beginners in these practices or for people who want to go deeper into the practices. We are advocates of healthy work environments, so our company culture programs are designed to bring wellness into the workplace. I am most proud of the results that I’ve witnessed from clients I’ve worked with. I’ve seen people transform, heal from illnesses and use the techniques we teach to live a happier life. What sets us apart is our education. It is important to educate people on the science of the practices and how and why it works.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest career moment is very personal. My ten year old son was experiencing lots of behavioral challenges, mostly at school. I’ve used the techniques that I teach about and share with others on and with him. There has been a major improvement in his behavior. He is literally a happier child.
Also, I am proud that I followed my heart to leave the corporate world to pursue entrepreneurship. I’m still Engineering. I simply shifted concentrations from Civil to Inner Engineering.
