Meet Liliana Leahy of Liliana Leahy Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liliana Leahy.

Liliana, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised halfway across the world in Jakarta, Indonesia. I moved here in 2006 and married my husband in 2007. In 2012, our family was blessed with the birth of our rainbow baby, Jackson. I remembered my husband said when he was little he had very few baby pictures and asked that we need to make sure that he has tons of pictures. In late 2012, I decided to get my first professional camera because I want to get amazing pictures for my son. I fell in love with photography right away, and I did a lot of research. Studying about photography became my passion. I was on Pinterest, YouTube, blogs, photographers groups, just learning and trying to get better at photography.

Once I was confident enough to do photography for real clients, Liliana Leahy Photography was born. It is my second baby, and I am very proud of what I have accomplished since then. At first, I only specialized in family and children photography, from maternity sessions, birth documentaries, newborn sessions, and their milestones through the years. In 2015 one of my birth images was featured on Woman’s Day, Cosmopolitan and Good Housekeeping, and that was one of my proudest moments since I started my photography journey. A few more images were featured on She Knows, Pregnancy Video, and Healthy Mummy.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not! Having a business is way more difficult than just having a hobby. There are so much things that I need to take into consideration for my business, I came to the US in 2006, I have no friends that would hire me. I was literally didn’t have the connections like many of my competitors in the area, where they have built friendships since kindergarten to college. I started Liliana Leahy Photography from scratch, word of mouth is the only way to get my name out there, and I am thankful for every single person who gave my name to their friends or family.

Liliana Leahy Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I love capturing lives’ moments through my lens. From the excitements of your wedding day, the birth of your children, and every single milestone your family got to celebrate, they are so important to me.

My clients trust me with their special moments and I am always grateful for them. I think what made me different from others is my personality. I love to laugh and have fun during my sessions, you’ll see me making weird sounds to get a baby’s attention, climbing a fence to get an amazing shot, running with a bride’s bouquet in my hands to get it to her, or jump for joy when I get “the shot”.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I think, when I saw my image on Woman’s Day, Good Housekeeping and Cosmopolitan. Never in a million years, I’d thought this moment would come. I was just a girl who came to the US to pursue my education, never thought of being a photographer, and to see the image I took published, that was just an amazing feeling.
