Meet Makalee Rae

Today we’d like to introduce you to Makalee Rae.

Hi Makalee, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always had an immense passion to create. I can still remember the first art workshop that I attended. I went straight to the store afterwards to buy a haul of art supplies and haven’t looked back since. I started by teaching myself how to sketch, then gravitated towards painting with watercolor and acrylics. I eventually expanded into other forms of expressive art – such as poetry and photography. As I got more confident in my work, I started sharing it on social media platforms.

Art for me is a creative outlet. It’s a form of baring my soul, with each stroke or piece of writing. The feeling I get from creating; whether it’s a happy & bright piece that can light up somebody’s day – or deep and emotional piece that somebody finds themselves connecting with – is unlike any other feeling in this world.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The creative process can be full of doubt at times. Behind every completed art piece is usually a stack of pieces that didn’t work out. This can easily manifest into creator’s block. I’ve definitely experienced this myself over the years, however, my passion for art burns strong enough that no matter how long I left it alone, I always came back to it with just as much eager. I’m still learning my exact style and medium that I want to lead with. Most importantly, I’m learning to conquer the fear of self-expression so I can deliver the message that I want in my artwork. A quote that constantly laces my mind is from Bob Ross, who reminds us there are no mistakes in art, but only happy little accidents.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m mainly an acrylic artist, as well as writer and content creator. My specialty is landscape paintings, however, my more recent paintings have been more diverse. I like to paint things that I’m passionate about, especially in bright colors. Although my primary medium is acrylic, I also work with watercolor, pen, and oils. My favorite thing about art is the way it can speak for itself without actually saying any words – and I hope in my work, people will find the inspiration to create and express without fear of judgment or failing.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I’m actually a self-taught artist. I attended one art workshop and watched a few YouTube videos – but all of the magic has literally taken place inside of my own bedroom. You don’t need to take years worth of art classes, have a degree, or buy the most expensive supplies to do this. All it takes is a few essentials and a lot of passion and determination. I’m still learning new skills and techniques every day and can’t wait to see how far I progress from here.
