Meet Malorie Orme of Petal and Fold

Today we’d like to introduce you to Malorie Orme.

Malorie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Petal + Fold was originally launched with one of my dearest friends from college in 2013. We found ourselves being drawn to create something that was relational & creative. As we started meeting with potential clients, we realized that partnering with people to create something that reflected a true picture of hospitality- no matter how ordinary or extraordinary the occasion – was where we thrived.

We had a ton of on-the-job training, serving clients with thoughtful design and beautiful blooms. It wasn’t until our second year of business that we found our niche in this beautiful flower industry. Petal + Fold now has a special focus on a subscription service that runs on intentionality and partnership.

We are also launching into a series of custom workshops in 2018 that allows us an opportunity to meet new friends in the community and partner with amazing creatives in the city for days of fun – full of flowers! The business has grown and changed so much over the last year, as I have taken on full ownership of Petal + Fold & my business partner has been able to step into being a rock star stay at home mom to her 2 boys.

Shaping your own business is far from glamorous, but I count it as such a joy and irreplaceable opportunity as I get to play a small role in some of life’s sweetest moments.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
That’s a great question. I’m not sure if starting your own business is ever incredibly smooth, but it also wasn’t turbulent. In the beginning, we had the great privilege of building our business slow and trying lots of different veins of work. With a strong friendship, full support from each of our husbands, and lots of laughter – we navigated through all the early stages of learning the floral industry from the ground up and figuring out where we could serve our client base best.

The support system has given such a steady foundation to what Petal + Fold is today because the pressure to create, or produce, certain outcomes in a short amount of time were not in place. My husband, Jason, has been the ultimate encourager and also helped shape our brand into something very special. He has encouraged me towards new ventures, opportunities for growth and been a sounding board for more flower ideas than I can recount. It is a game changer to have the best cheering section in your corner for all the hard days and all the big wins!

Petal and Fold – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Petal + Fold exists to celebrate life’s sweetest moments with intentionality and flowers.

We partner with people to celebrate every kind of occasion you can imagine. We get to create special occasion bouquets, arrangements for retail spaces, holiday wreaths, wedding design & florals, dinner party centerpieces, anniversary celebrations, host workshops and my personal favorite – floral subscriptions. We have a unique set of subscription offerings for husbands, homemakers, businesses or the person who just loves fresh flowers in their home. This is my favorite offering because it yields consistent overlap and relational equity with clients all throughout the year.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as the intersection where life-giving work & your ordinary life begin to collide in beautiful ways. A litmus test I run my own work through is asking myself if the following is happening: am I engaging my vision for work and natural gifting? How is my family experiencing me in light of my work? Am I creating opportunities for growth, not only for Petal + Fold but for other creatives in Atlanta? Are my contributions to my clients and my community yielding positive influence?

When the answer to any of those questions begins to turn negative, it is a quick red flag to me that there is room for recalibrating somewhere in my personal and/or professional life.
