Meet Merritt Blanks Jr.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Merritt Blanks Jr.

Merritt Blanks Jr is originally from Rockingham NC and raised in High Point NC. At the age of three, he was inspired by Michael Jackson and hasn’t stopped dancing since. Dance and choreography have always been a passion of his even before realizing that it was a dream that he could pursue. His family would always encourage him to dance at family events growing up, and from there he started to notice that he had a gift after competing in different talent shows throughout high school and college and winning them. Unlike most who are pursuing their careers in the dance industry, Merritt was never apart of a dance team or affiliated with a dance studio. Sports was his first love, so he was very active after school, but he also found that dance brought peace of mind, and much joy to his life as well.

Merritt became a member of the Mu Tau Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte in the spring of 2016 where he served as the Step and Stroll Master. After gaining experience with creating choreography and performing on a higher level, he graduated in 2017 and decided that it was time to follow his heart and fully commit to what he loves the most… DANCE!

After graduating he began training by taking weekly classes and in no time he began overseeing five competition teams in Charlotte NC at Fuzion Force Dance Complex. Merritt enjoyed gaining experience as a choreographer but felt as if it was time to take it up a notch. After a year of teaching, he moved to Atlanta GA in August of 2018 after auditioning and making ATLA Entertainment Studios Cycle 6 dance company. Within just ONE year, Merritt has been blessed to work with IGGY Azalea, Lil Yachty, Layton Green, Canton Jones, appear on BET+ and more…

To end 2019 off strong Merritt has also been granted the opportunity to go on his first Tour with Dennis Reed & GAP and has now gained experience dancing oversees in Italy throughout 8 different cities. If he had to give any advice to anyone he would say to TRUST GOD AND HAVE FAITH! It works!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome
Growing up Sports was a major focus. Merritt received a football scholarship to Lenoir-Rhyne University and thought that his career was set from there. Sophomore year of college he tore his ACL and meniscus and had to have a second surgery because the first one is unsuccessful. Not being able to walk at all made him realize how much he missed being able to dance and missed it more than football itself. Before deciding to move to Atlanta Merritt also got into a car wreck that changed his perspective completely. Life is short so if you don’t follow your heart and take the risk then you’ll live with regrets.

Please tell us about your work.
Choreographer/Dancer. Specialize in Hip Hop & Step. Known for High ENERGY & Precision. What sets me apart from others is the fact that no matter what my number one priority in the industry is to have fun! It shows in my classes and when I’m on jobs. Growing up and loving dance before pursuing it as an adult has shown a lot of benefits. While others may battle with the lack of perfection, people can usually see that no matter what I enjoy dance first before anything else.

Do you believe in Luck, good or bad?
I’m not a fan of luck! When it comes to your Gift from God the main focus is purpose. My favorite poem is DONT Quit by John Greenleaf Whittier. Things may go wrong, but you just can’t give up. I’m big on faith so even when things go wrong I always pray and end up realizing that I needed to go through the hardship.
