Meet Miss Primrose Campbell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Miss Primrose Campbell. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Primrose D Campbell also known as Miss Primrose is a Hip Hop/Pop and RnB artist out of Atlanta, GA who has been influenced by her strict upbringing, broke away from the expectations of society and decided to live her best life and encourage others to do the same. Born in Newark, New Jersey and raised in a Jamaican household, Miss Primrose attributes her creativity and style of artistry to Icons such as Bob Marley, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, Beyoncé and Nao. Miss Primrose has been performing since the age of 13 and began her musical journey in November of 2020. Since her debut, Miss Primrose has released three singles, performed in venues all over metro Atlanta, toured in the Southeast region and LA, and has been awarded the honorary award of musical excellence presented at the Foreman Empire Film Festival International along with four other awards. She also received the R&B artist of the year award at the 2021 Annual Black Only Awards. Miss Primrose is also the curator of the indie fresh virtual concerts, a platform geared towards opportunities for independent artists to be seen and heard by DJ’s and industry elites. Miss Primrose lives her life by a quote first heard by her idol, Dr. Frances Cress Welsing, “Your service to others in the rent you pay for your room here on earth.” Serve well.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve had friends abandon my journey and I once thought, “is this a reflection of me” only to find it was due to jealously! This was crazy to me because I always want everyone to win. I don’t want to journey this life alone. I have only begun to scratch the surface of my dreams! I’ve paid my love forward in so many ways, only to have others disrespect my time one to many times. I learned really quickly, those who want to be will be present. I can only control my approach and move forward gracefully. I don’t allow the lack of timeliness from others to deter me from following my flow. In the beginning, I used to get upset but as time goes on and I remember that it is not my problem, it is within the individual themself and I must go on my way.

One of the most emanate pain points within this industry is to witness, as black woman, individuals leverage their notoriety with dramatic promise to follow, without expectation of some fulfilling, romanticized fantasy that only exists in their imagination. I was not aware of the level of seriousness until my own experience. Now I’m learning that this smile can sometimes be dangerous, lol but seriously, I had some issues in my younger years with leading people on, and I can be honest about that. But in this industry, it can get very dangerous so I just don’t even play those games, I keep business as business and I make sure everyone I’m working with knows that we are conducting business. Being straightforward has saved me from a lot of blurred line situations if you get what I mean. Overall, I control what I do and the narrative that I allow so I maintain my awareness of that.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In my earlier years, I’ve served within the collegiate Color Guard, given this is a passion I’ve participated in since in 10th grade while coaching youth and performing professionally. Color Guard has really shaped me as an entertainer, specifically with performance, which is where I witnessed the transference of performance (me) and spectatorship. Given what I visualize, I really seek to make my performances come alive.

I am known for my philanthropic work in promotion with my brand, Miss Primrose. We promote positive imagery and self-development. I am truly intentional with my message and the influence I may have on others, especially children who watch me. Being authentically me has always been the goal and freedom is the message I want to convey.

In November of 2021, within my first year of being in this industry, I performed on P. Diddy’s revolt summit stage for the Be heard competition. There were over 400+ contestants and it came down to 6 of us to compete for the grand prize of 20k. I received feedback from moguls Big Tigga, Rapsody, LatheGoat, and Chaka Zulu. I didn’t’ win the competition but for me, this was still a huge milestone for someone who hasn’t been in the industry very long yet got to perform for hundreds of thousands and get feedback for some amazing music executives. I’m still sharpening my tools with the feedback I was given from this experience.

I’ve recently had the pleasure of touring the country with Rap Plug Live on the legendz of the streetz tour with headliners such as Rick Ross, Trina, Jeezy, Gucci Mane, 2Chainz and a few more amazing street legends. This opportunity brought me into a whole different atmosphere and a new level of relationships in this industry that I’ve thrusted myself into. I’m grateful to be able to water these relationships and grow into a newer version of myself.

Within my music, I do not try to hyper-sexualized myself for notice……..don’t get me wrong, I am a sexual being and every now and again, you’ll see me shake my ass cause I want to …..lol, no pun intended, but my message is promoting freedom and loving all that is you. I want people to come into themselves and be who they are…..unapologetically. I especially want to influence youth to behold who they are….infinity is the limit.

I am most proud of my baby that I’ve created to help independent artists just like me here in Atlanta. Indie fresh concerts was born from an idea that a friend and I had during the pandemic. We weren’t able to go to shows freely and perform with everything being on lockdown at the time so we decided to throw a virtual concert. Where fans from all over could watch their favorite indie artist perform from the comfort of their home. We put on the first show within five days, which was the quickest turn around we’d ever done for an event, lol but we had a full line up and people were tuning in from everywhere. This was when we realized that we may be onto something, so we went on to throw indie fresh two a few months later and it was another milestone success. Now we are approaching Indie fresh three after some time of planning and growing, we are getting ready to bring our best show yet and I am super thrilled to bring this show after the new connections I’ve made along the way.

So be sure to come out to 4U recording Studios on May 20th from 6-10pm and tell them VoyageATL sent you for a special gift at the door!

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
As a kid, I was very bold, have my momma tell it. I loved attention and smiling because I knew at a young age that there was just something different about my aura, I didn’t know exactly what it was then, but I was aware and just knew I felt like I stood out. I was very involved in school from a young age. In elementary school, I cheered, learned and loved double dutch so I joined a team. I loved being social and joining different teams and groups. In high school, I was on the color guard, step team and track team.

Personality-wise, I would say I was more dramatic then lol. But it’s kind of weird because I was a tomboy who loved play fighting my older brother, but I was also a girly girl who loved the color pink, fantasizing about my prince charming and doing my hair and nails. I am the baby of my family so most would say I was spoiled. I just say my parents finally got it right and ended with me, lol.

My dad was and is a Bishop and my moms a pastor so my behavior was always expected to be one that was the perfect example to the church but I can honestly say I never lived up to those standards lol I kinda just always believed in doing my own thing. Part of it was me not understanding why I had to live to such strict stipulations and the other part was just hated being told what to do.
