Meet Monica Sunny of The Chai Box

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Sunny.

Monica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Although we started this company a little over a year ago, it has been in my heart and mind as long as I can remember. It really took root when my boys were little and I wanted to share my Indian culture and heritage with them as they grew up in Atlanta. What better way to do this than with Chai. I have great memories of waking up every morning and having Chai with my family.

My mom would make a big pot of Chai that made the house smell heavenly! The smell of cardamom and fennel still takes me back to my childhood in India. Chai is more than a drink, it is a way of bringing people together. It is grounded in tradition and the amazing spices that make this drink a masterpiece. So, when my boys were little, we started doing Chai time after school on Fridays and it quickly became one of our favorite traditions.

When they got older, they wanted to learn how to make Chai, so I took a traditional spice box and filled it with tea leaves and all the spices you need to make Chai and included an index card with step by step instructions on how to make a cup of Chai. This is how all three of them learned how to make Chai. Who would have thought, ten years later, it would be one of our products called the Chaibox. 🙂 The creation of the company started one summer when I was visiting my family in Canada. My cousin, Neeteka and I both share the passion of blending teas.

The conversation that started over a cup of coffee soon turned into a Tea business idea. Blending Tea and teaching people of Chai, gives me amazing energy and takes me to a place where I am truly happy. It connects me to my culture and my inner Chai! My daily ritual is making my Chai and enjoying a cup before anyone wakes me. It’s me and my Chai time! I call it Tea Meditation!

Has it been a smooth road?
Of course not! Starting a business rarely is a smooth road! Being a working mom, its hard to juggle work, home life and if you throw in starting a business well, that will just mess up any balance you may have created. It requires time and can take over your life if you are not surrounded by people to remind you to keep moving forward but keep a pulse on where you stand!

Thankfully, I have my rock, my foundation, my hubby, Sundeep, who is my pillar of strength. I also have 3 little pillars, Ethan, Evan, Ian who are the love of my life and help me with packaging, inventory, set up. They are the fuel that keeps me going!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a Tea Blending company, specializing in Chai. We make handcrafted loose leaf tea blends. Our ingredients are ethically sourced and handpicked from plantations in Kerala, India. We believe in the crop to cup. To us, it was important that the ingredients we used in our blends came from the local plantations and farmers that take pride in their work to ensure quality and natural cultivation of these spices.

With no pesticides or artificial flavors, rest assured, you are enjoying the best nature has to offer! Our spices are key to our blends and we promise, you will be able to tell the difference immediately. From the moment you open our blends, you will be greeted by the robust aroma and the beautiful colors of our spices. We have taken our personal Chai experiences with our mother’s recipes and created east and west infusion blends.

All of our blends are inspired by different regions in India. Chai is made in many different ways throughout India, enhancing local flavors and utilizing regional spices. We wanted to create blends that give you the opportunity to get to know these beautiful places and enjoy the local flavors in your cup!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, I think so! There is a big trend for people OTP and ITP wanted to learn more about where their food is coming from rather than the package it comes in. Farm to table, crop to the table are concepts people are demanding not just reading about. Marietta is growing and people are exploring food and its health benefits. I would highly recommend this area!
