Meet Nancy Hartung of Nancy’s Vintage Shop in Marietta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Hartung.

Nancy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My admiration for vintage items started when I was very young and grew stronger and stronger as I got older. I always vintage shopped for myself and had not considered it as a career opportunity. I first became a vintage dealer, in late 2016, as a vendor for an antique mall, while simultaneously working full-time at a large corporation based in Atlanta.

As a vendor, a dream of having my own brick and mortar vintage store erupted. After lots of planning and convincing from my husband, I decided to open Nancy’s Vintage Shop. I felt there was a small void of a boutique-sized vintage shopping experience in Marietta, and I wanted to provide that service for my community.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nancy’s Vintage Shop opened its door in April 2018, and it has not been a smooth road–fun and rewarding, but not smooth!

Many folks that have entered the shop don’t seem to understand its concept. They think “consignment” or “thrift.” I consistently have to respond to requests relating to consigning and have to explain that I am the sole curator of the shop. I don’t have vendors or sell things on consignment which seems to puzzle a lot of people. While my inventory is technically used, it is also challenging at times to explain what vintage is and why it’s special and how its different from thrifts.

As a new business, publicity, advertising and attracting more foot traffic has been challenging as well. Slowly, the community is discovering Nancy’s Vintage Shop, and the majority of the feedback received has been positive!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Nancy’s Vintage Shop story. Tell us more about the business.
Nancy’s Vintage Shop is a boutique-sized, vintage shopping experience that provides an eclectic variety of vintage clothing and collectibles for everyone! The shop’s inventory consists of special items from the 1960s to the 1990s.

The items fall into three major categories: apparel, housewares and accessories. The inventory is selectively curated and is in very good to excellent condition. I thrive to provide vintage clothing and accessories that are ready to wear and housewares that are ready to use.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Some people call it good luck, but I am a believer in God’s blessings, which have played a major role in my life and business.

I have been blessed to have a great husband that has been extremely supportive of my dream and major career change. I have met wonderful customers, some of which have even gifted great inventory for my shop. I also have been blessed with connecting with professionals that believed in working with me and giving my little startup a chance.

I believe in “pray, believe and receive,” which has been imperative to my growing success.
