Meet Patsy Overton of Patsy Overton Interiors in Cumming

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patsy Overton.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born in Athens, GA with a Sherwin-Williams fan deck clutched in my tiny little hand. My parents marveled that the first words out of my mouth were Comfort Gray SW6205 and Holiday Turquoise SW0075. After earning a degree in music from UGA, I moved to Atlanta where I met my husband, a former Kentucky basketball coach. I landed an exciting job in the insurance industry, then drifted into boredom. Color me settled.

In January of 2007 I found myself without a job and decided to get a real estate license. (I’ve never had a great sense of timing.) While on class break one day I picked up a book on home staging, bought it, read the entire thing that night and immediately knew that was my calling. I completed the real estate course work, miraculously passed the licensing test, then set out to become trained as a home stager through Barb Swarz’s StagedHomes.com. Color me focused.

Several years into the staging business I was frustrated over a lack of consistent work.

(The fact that the country was in the midst of the worst housing market since the Great Depression may have had something to do with it.) Regardless, I knew I must add to my list of services. During that time, I happened to see a conversation online about being trained as a color consultant. I packed my bags and drove to Charlotte for training and certification. When I returned to Atlanta I began calling on paint stores to let them know help was available for in-home work as a color consultant. Who knew there were so many people out there needing help with color selections? Color me employed.

Since then I’ve received additional color training and certification from Maria Killam, color guru in Canada, and have been a guest blogger on her much-acclaimed website.

Today I work primarily as a color consultant with well over 1,000 consultations under my belt. I continue to work for several painting companies while assisting individual homeowners with their color, decorating and redesign needs. In addition, as of 2016, I now offer training workshops and certification courses in these disciplines. Color me experienced.

Presently, I head out into the Atlanta traffic each day to assist homeowners with their color and home décor needs with a smile on my face and a song in my heart — not to mention a fan deck in my hand. Color me happy.

Has it been a smooth road?
A smooth road? What’s that? I think the hardest thing to grasp for an entrepreneur is that things never remain the same. What worked yesterday will not work today and what works today will not work tomorrow. Everything is so fast paced with the internet and social media that you and your company have to continue to grow and evolve each day in order to stay viable. The one constant is change. If you ever get comfortable where you are you will find someone has taken your place.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
While my company started out as a home staging company, today I work primarily as a color consultant.

When I was first trained and certified in color in 2010 I did NOT receive instruction on how to perform exterior color consultations. That presented a problem when my first calls were jobs for exterior help. I had to learn on the fly.

Expecting to do nothing but interior work, it intrigued me that people would hire me for exterior color consultations; but when I thought about it made perfect sense. If you make a color mistake inside, very few people see it. If you make a color mistake outside, everyone sees it! That’s where the stakes are the highest and the financial investment is the strongest. All that to say, probably 80% of my work today as a consultant is for exteriors — and I had no one to train or help me. I was forced to figure it out on my own.

Also, in the past few weeks I’ve been making changes to my website to keep it current. It gives me great pride to look at the body of work represented and see what I’ve been able to accomplish in the past seven years.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Atlanta is a great city for color consultants. The need is everywhere — both inside and out.

Pricing:

  • Exterior Color Consultations – $295
  • Interior Color Consultations – $295 (up to two hours)
