Today we’d like to introduce you to Rashawn Capers.
Rashawn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My journey in photography began when I needed someone to take pictures for my son’s 2nd birthday party. He wanted to charge $250 for one hour of coverage. I immediately declined. I went to eBay and began to research a variety of cameras. The Cannon T3i caught my eye. Now at this point, I have never used a camera nor have I had an interest in taking pictures. When my camera arrived, I immediately read the manual and watched YouTube videos so I could really utilize it. All in all, the pictures from the party turned out great! It made me yearn for more and really study the art of photography. At the time, I was attending the best college we all know as Thee Fort Valley State University. I started randomly taking pictures at every event that was on campus. I did this for about one year until I landed a job on campus as an event photographer. I was able to enjoy college as a student, as well as get paid for attending all of the campus events. Let me be honest, at some point I felt that I was only known as the campus photographer and it wasn’t a good feeling. I wanted to expand. A friend of mine was interested in taking maternity photos and she trusted me to take them. That shoot was the first of many. As of today, I have done over 1,500 paid photoshoots ranging from weddings, events, graduations and much more. I was able to start my own company that is well respected by many.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This journey was definitely not a smooth one. I’m always thinking of new ways to improve my business and I’m constantly purchasing software for editing. I am very competitive and in this field, there is competition. There were about 4 other photographers on campus at the time. Imagine being the new photographer on campus with no experience. You could say it was slightly intimidating, but I knew it was all about having confidence in the photos I produced and having faith in my business which I still believe to this day. Another challenge was the financial inconsistency. The money isn’t always guaranteed, but to see my final product is a reward within itself.
