Meet Randi Shapiro of Recruiting Specialists

Today we’d like to introduce you to Randi Shapiro.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Randi. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a second generation recruiter, having grown up in a family in which my late mother owned a staffing agency in the Perimeter area for 30 years. Not long after she passed away in 2000 I came to a crossroads in my life and wondered what to do next. I remember my mom always telling me “you can do anything you set your mind to!” So, with her words ringing true in my head, I decided to take the leap and go out on my own as an entrepreneur and relationship builder. In 2003 I founded Recruiting Specialists, and in the 14 years since I have been blessed to “play matchmaker” in partnering with my roster of clients and candidates.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well, life is never easy. There are always curve balls to deal with. My mom passing away was a struggle for sure, as I initially didn’t know how to press on without her in the business and career that I loved so much. Owning my company was definitely problematic at first, as I constantly suffered with the fear of “can I do this?” But I persevered and experienced success…. until the recession of 2008 and the downtrodden economy that ensued. The struggle was real – companies establishing hiring freezes and putting a moratorium on utilizing outside recruiting sources – but through it all I learned to work harder and smarter, and as a result reaped the benefits of the mindset that I still espouse to this very day.

Please tell us about Recruiting Specialists.
Recruiting Specialists, Inc. is a full service, direct hire firm that places top talent with Fortune 100 to Fortune 500 firms and small to medium privately held companies. I specialize in placing permanent positions for various disciplines such as Advertising, PR, marketing, creative, social media, account management and all things digital. I also have corporate client companies where I place candidates in executive and administrative support, HR and the office management arena. I handle the entire recruiting lifecycle from sourcing candidates to extending the offer.

I feel what sets me apart is that I listen to everyone, first and foremost, with compassion. Every candidate I encounter has a different story. I guide, coach and counsel my candidates and clients during their entire search and interview process and act as a partner to them along the way.

Most know me in the recruiting industry for my success in advertising/marketing and PR industries, though I truly am a “generalist” type recruiter. I have built relationships with an array of executives and candidates coming from all different types of industries.

I am most proud of the fact that I have a business that allows me to be of service to others.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Sunday dinners with my immediate family and invited friends. My dad was a great cook – he made the best meatballs and lasagna. There were lots of laughs – and lots and lots of food!

As a youngster, I also loved sitting with my mother and father before dinner and hearing about my mom’s day at the office. What happened that was interesting, funny, etc. And yes, my mother had some crazy, bizarre stories too!
