Today we’d like to introduce you to Sariah Luna.
Sariah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a wife, mother of five children and one angel baby and a photographer. I started taking pictures on a 35 mm camera in high school about 15 years ago. I learned the basics of composition and how to develop film in a dark room the old fashioned way. When I got married and had kids, my passion for photography grew and I started taking more pictures of everyday things. I specifically loved landscapes and nature. As the kids got older, I got more and more into photography and my husband tried to tell me for several years that I should look into pursuing it as a career, It wasn’t until I took a photography certificate class at a University in Alabama and learned more about editing and had some friends help me understand manual mode, that I started really pursuing it. I found an online mentor who helped me so much with learning different things and I used my husband’s deployment on a Navy Ship as a way to practice my photography so that he could enjoy pictures of the kids. After he returned home from deployment, I started building up my portfolio more before we made the big move across the country to Georgia.
Once we got to Georgia, I started the process of becoming a legal business and built up my portfolio a little more and started taking on paying clients. I have gotten nothing but positive feedback from my clients and have several returning clients already. My goal is to be budget friendly and help those families that may not have had the chance to get photos done due to financial issues. We have always lived on tight budget and I want to give families these memories. That is the most important part of what I do. Capturing memories of important life events is one of the reasons I do what I do and have a true passion for it. I love helping others capturing special memories and I will also be working on some special creative projects in the future that are close to my heart including a documentary on Rainbow babies that honor moms who are pregnant with their rainbow baby and the story leading to the rainbow baby. Being able to share my passion and talent for photography is very important to me.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part, it has been a smooth road. The hardest part was getting clients to take me seriously in the beginning when I was building my portfolio. Once I got started though and started to get some word of mouth, things started to pick up. I have had some amazing clients and feel like I have grown a ton as a photographer even in the last few years.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Reflections By Luna – what should we know?
“Reflections by Luna” is my Photography business. I specialize in family, children and maternity photography. I also do senior and engagements as well. My favorite is maternity. That special glow of the mom and the love and pride from the dad is one of my favorite things to capture. I also love family photography and especially telling a story from the beginning and on. One of the things that I am known for is my style and my ability to capture the passion and emotion in a family.
The thing I am most proud of is the feedback I have received from my clients telling me that I captured exactly what they wanted and that I took the time to get to know them and their family. What sets me apart from other photographers is that I try to make my clients more than just a client. It’s not really about the money for me. It’s about capturing memories that will last a lifetime and helping those that might not have that chance any other time. Another thing that sets me apart is how much I charge. I try to be as budget friendly as possible and also offer student and military discounts. I also have affordable payment plan options as well.
I also do landscape photography and nature photography on the side to sell as prints.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The quality or characteristic that I feel is most important for my success is Integrity. There are many photographers out there that try to sell their skills as better than they actually are. My goal is to give client’s their money’s worth. I don’t want to be one of the photographers that charge too much but doesn’t provide the quality that goes with that price. I take time to research and get to know my clients beforehand and go into the session with a plan to get the photos that my clients desire and then give them the best quality images I can possibly provide. I do not lie about my skills to get more clients and I don’t charge more than what I believe my skills and quality are worth.
