Today we’d like to introduce you to Rhonda ‘Rho’ Shelton.
Rhonda ‘Rho’, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Rho (mother) 1/2 of Dynamic Duo Fitness I’ve always loved to dance but with no formal dance training, the likelihood of a dance career was out. I didn’t realize I had the gift of gab until much later in life but still had no idea how to use it.
Then during a pivotal time in my life, just after my 40th birthday, I realized I couldn’t settle for my life the way it was, unfulfilling.
My spiritual mentor had me do an exercise; I was to write down everything that made me happy when I did them. All I could think of (that was legal…lol) is dancing and talking. Then she had me write down all the careers I could have dancing and talking and I was perplexed. ‘I’m not a dancer, I just love to dance!’
Fast forward one year and I’m taking an adult kickboxing class to bide my time while my six years old takes taekwondo. The class has a cardio component to it – done to a mix with a great beat and I’m hooked!
Four years later and I’ve been training in kickboxing and loving every minute of it and my sabom asks if I want to teach it and the bells and whistles go off inside me! And then my list from years before pops back in my head and I start thinking, ‘if I can teach CardioKickboxing, I could teach a dance aerobics or hip hop class too.’ Dancing and talking. After 14 years of dancing and talking for others, here I am with my own fitness studio, working out my clients to serious beats; dancing and talking.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Lawd, where do I start! I began my adult life as a very young mother of 3, in an abusive relationship, on the streets of NYC. I had Low self-esteem, very little confidence, and definitely no reference point on where or how to start teaching fitness classes. My former kickboxing sabom had closed his studio so I was lost. However, I’ve always been smart and resourceful so I found the places and made the connections that got me some instructing gigs but it took me almost three years of low or no class turn out, facilities deciding to go in a ‘different direction’, and fear and self-doubt before I started seeing any real progress. My friends and family were great supporters and my daughter Lakeisha (LV) was right by my side, taking every class I taught!
At some point around year 10-11 of my fitness voyage l realized I wanted my own fitness studio and the doubts and fears that had disappeared with the success of my classes came back.
I decided to go back to school to finish my business degree, then take SBA business training and add some more certifications (other than the 7 I already had) to my arsenal to see if I even had it in me to be an entrepreneur. I knew I did, I’ve always known I was a beast, a shot caller, a badass but fear will turn a panther into a pussycat – just like that.
Opened my 1st fitness studio in 2019 and closed it less than a year later on the heels of Covid. I lost everything. Don’t ask me how I knew it wasn’t the end but a chance at a new beginning, I just did, so I kept my eyes on the prize. I opened my 2nd fitness studio on Juneteenth 2021 with my daughter LV at my side, now as co-owner.
