Meet Richard Turnbull of UK2U Discos and Events in Carrollton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Turnbull.

Richard, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am an English DJ and Event Organizer that moved to Georgia last year from Tuscany, Italy, to marry my (now) wife, who lives in Carrollton GA.
In the UK I had a very successful (and enjoyable) business DJ’ing and working with companies and organizations to arrange special events – one memorable Event was when I was asked by a large bank to arrange a party for over a 1000 employees of different ages and backgrounds!!

Not an easy task to please such a diverse group, but, my solution was to hire the whole of a local sports stadium and transform the whole building into a ‘Cruise Ship’ for the night with different entertainment in each of the 7 function rooms, so, whether people wanted a sedate Piano Bar/Casino experience or a full on Disco Extravaganza! (and everything in between) there was something for everybody – topped off with a ‘Titanic’ Themed buffet running all night so people could eat as and when it suited them.

The business was growing from strength to strength but in January 2002, whilst looking to book a holiday to Italy, I stumbled across a 200 year old farmhouse for sale, with 15 acres of OlIve Groves, Vines and Fruit Trees nestled in the Tuscan Hills – in one word it looked ‘Idyllic’ and, remarkably, was the same price as the house I had in England, 4 months later it was my new home! For 14 years I had a great adventure, making Olive Oil, wine, and cider as well as running a successful building business and launching a magazine for Tuscany ( and also been fortunate to DJ at some of the most amazing Castles and Villas – even Kanye & Kim’s wedding venue in Florence!)

The exploits were filmed by UK TV and were so popular that it led to 3 TV Series that have been shown around the world and which I know from numerous emails have inspired many people to ‘Live their Dreams’ which is a great feeling.

A chance comment about ‘ How does an English Guy end up making Olive Oil in Tuscany’ started my relationship with my, now, wife and has brought me to this great part of the world.

I have already started DJ’ing here for parties, weddings, schools and even at a couple of 5k events at The University Of West Georgia and have some Daddy Daughter Discos coming up in February, that I’m really looking forward to as it’s not something we do in England so should be a lot of fun! In addition, I have added ‘Silent’ Discos to the services I offer, whereby, guests wear wireless headphones and can select from 3 different channels of music, set their own volume and PARTY!! This has proven to be great fun for all ages and very popular with corporate clients as it can be tailored to the guests preferences,
I have also been called upon to do building works, from maintenance jobs to new kitchens!!

One of the great things about the famous ‘Southern Hospitality’ is that it seems whenever someone strikes up a conversation it leads to a business opportunity!!

Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest ‘Headache’ has been going through the immigration process! It has been a long and at times frustrating journey, however, on the positive side, part of the frustration was that there was work for me to do but I couldn’t be paid because I didn’t have a Social Security number – thankfully, it has now arrived, so ‘Full Steam Ahead!’
One of the most ‘Amusing’ challenges has been my accent 🙂 From the almost daily ‘Where you from??’ to the quite forward, ‘Gee, I could listen to you talk all day!!’.

One funny incident occurred the day after I had DJ’d at a local school’s Fall Festival. My wife and I were going Mountain Biking and had to pay an entrance fee to the park, the lady in the booth recognized me and said, ‘ You were the DJ yesterday, you were great, every time you were speaking on the microphone I told my friends ‘ shush – he’s talking!’ It didn’t matter what you were saying, I just love hearing your accent!!’

So, as you know, we’re impressed with UK2U Discos and Events – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
As a DJ I have done every kind of party from the smallest to sports crowds of over 20 000, School Discos to retirement parties, and yet I still approach every event as ‘unique’ which it is! I love music but also love interacting with people to ensure everyone has a great time.

I may be the DJ or Organizer of an Event but I’m also a ‘person’ at the Event and I want to have a good time just as much as I want everyone there to have a good time.

With the advances in technology, the effects that are available now are fantastic and I love transforming ‘ordinary’ venues into amazing spaces.

I also love that as a business, there are always new developments such as the ‘Silent’ Disco Experience which just add more ways for people to have FUN!

I have been doing this for more than 30 years and know that I will always love doing it, working with people to achieve the common goal of ‘A Great Event’, whether it be a wedding, office party, fundraiser, or any celebration is the best job in the world!

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
There is a panorama that you get at a certain point on I20 as you approach Atlanta which is breathtaking, the whole city is before you like a surreal postcard!

I love the food, the view from the top of Westin, the Olympic Park and the Vortex Bar ( Best entrance EVER!!)
On the negative side obviously, driving through the city!! This can best be described as a ‘Near Death Experience!!’ ( Literally!!)
