Today we’d like to introduce you to Richie A’llyn.
Richie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was always interested in makeup from a very young age. I was the one getting in “trouble” for applying too much lipgloss on my lips. I always sat and watched my mom get ready for her performances, and couldn’t wait until I was old enough to apply makeup myself. In high school, I stuck to the basics: eyeliner, mascara, and lipgloss. It wasn’t until after I graduated high school, where I started to take makeup seriously. My first “client” was my sister. She didn’t have a makeup artist for her senior prom, so my mom made me do it. I used some of my mom’s makeup and the little bit of makeup that I had. I was so nervous, but her face came out bomb! From there, I watched tons of YouTube videos, stayed in all the makeup stores racking up on makeup and just practiced. My sophomore year in college is when my friends started letting me practice on them, and from there, my business grew. I came up with a business name, promoted myself, and my clientele grew. I’ve done photoshoots in New York, Philadelphia’s Fashion Week, weddings, and proms.
Has it been a smooth road?
Being a self-taught Freelance makeup artist has not been an easy road. There are times where I get so discouraged, and those negative thoughts arise, but I have to tell myself that I’m a bomb makeup artist! Or I’ll get a random messages from family members, friends, or someone I follow on social media, telling me how proud they are of me. Those messages are what keeps me going. There are also “dry” seasons of being a makeup artist. Some weeks I have clients after clients, shoots after shoots, and I’m super busy. Then, there are times where it gets really dry, and I’ll go a week without any clients. During those times, I try to keep myself busy: studying, practicing new makeup techniques, or doing something creative.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
“EverythingBeautyByRich” is my makeup brand. I am a self-taught Freelance Makeup Artist from Philadelphia that specializes in makeup applications for weddings, shoots, proms, fashion shows, and more. Although my main focus is makeup artistry, I also include makeup and hair tips, YouTube hair and makeup videos, skincare tips, basically “everything beauty.” I am most proud of how far I’ve come. I’m not saying that I didn’t see myself getting this far, but it seems like it came so fast. I’m proud of the fact that I’m still growing, learning, networking, and reaching my goals.
I always let my clients know that makeup is supposed to make you look and feel good. The point of makeup TO ME is to enhance what is already there, and I think that sets me apart from other makeup artists. I make sure that when my clients look in the mirror, they see themselves, but a 2.0 version. I’m all about enhancing what’s already there.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel like Atlanta is definitely a good place for a makeup artist. To me, Atlanta is thriving in the entertainment industry, and there is always a makeup artist needed. There is always something going on, and women like to look good. I definitely think that Atlanta is the place for someone starting out in this industry. A place where the entertainment business is booming is the perfect place for a makeup artist.
