Meet Robert Gatling of The Evaluation Group in Northwest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Gatling.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started my business in 2005 at the height of the economic recession. After working in the corporate IT world for years, I felt the need to start my own business. The first year I had no customers and depleted most of my savings, but after plugging away and networking I finally got my first customer designing her company website. My only employee was my Jack Russell dog “Patch”! But over ten years later I can say that God has blessed me with great customers to design and manage their websites. I believe that anything worth having is worth the effort. For many of us life is not easy, but if you commit yourself, work hard and believe in something greater that yourself, you can achieve your goals!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I would not say the road has been smooth but it has been a journey that I needed to take. As an entrepreneur, it is very satisfying to own and operate my own business. I lost some customers during the economic down years, and therefore still have a “day” job as a IT Project Manager. However, one day I dream of being completely self sustaining with my business as I constantly seek new clientele.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
The Evaluation Group provides website development, IT Consulting, Management Services and Job Readiness Training Workshops. We can design and manage websites for personal and business use. We specialize in developing and managing WordPress websites. I am most proud of providing a platform for my customers to establish and maximize their Internet presence so they can be successful!

The quote below from one of my customers, is why I enjoy doing what I do: “To put it plainly Robert (Evaluation Group) is a client focused God send! Robert designed and maintains my Company web page…. From the first meeting to current update monthly meetings he commits his best. I have never felt like I was one of many, but the most important client he has. He was very astute to what I desired, and was bold in giving his opinion on courses of action to be taken. Driven to provide a quality product he worked tirelessly and I could not be happier with the results. Robert will be my IT consultant for web design and IT maintenance for years to come. Try him out you will not be disappointed!”

What were you like growing up?
It’s hard for me at times to talk about myself, but I think I was a hardworking, good kid. I don’t know why but I had many nicknames as a child: Lil Man, Gilbert, Tracy, etc., I guess I liked to play roles! I loved playing outside, riding my bike and cars. I got my first job delivering newspapers and cutting grass for my neighbors in Newport News, VA. By the time I was in high school, I worked after school at a TV Repair shop where I developed a liking for electronics. I thank my parents and my paternal grandmother for raising me “right” and teaching me to respect others.
