Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanita Denton.
Shanita, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started out by first designing and having my garments made by a seamstress who later became my mentor. She just one day decided she wasn’t going to stitch my garments anymore because she saw “a gift” in me. She said she would teach me how to make all my designs come to life. After one sewing class I was hooked and it became an addiction. Soon after I birthed “Divmond Kut Kouture” which later transitioned into the brand today known as “S. Denton Collection”
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, no, no! It definitely has not been a smooth road. But that’s what makes the journey so rewarding. I had to make tons of mistakes. Mess up some garments for clients. I lost A LOT of money and people along the way. I am grateful for those challenges though because they shaped me, allowed me to grow and be firm on my choices to execute in a business mindset properly. For every challenge, I faced I was faced with even greater rewards. You will lose yourself trying to run a business and I believe you need great support and a strong team behind you. Something I am working on.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the S.Denton Collection Co. story. Tell us more about the business.
S. Denton Collection is a women’s fashion line that specializes in everything but mainly all things sequin. I incorporate a lot of my own personal style into my brand while still trying to appeal to every woman. It’s a classic brand made of sequin pants suits, skirts, kimono sets, jacket. All the way up to your gowns, prom, and bridal needs. I’m mainly known for my sequin collections though and I am most proud of how my garments make women feel. Like they are beautiful and can stand out. I believe that’s what sets me aside from others. I try to be as personal yet professional as I can to let clients know they matter.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I wouldn’t say luck I would say Hard work. I believe you do the work your work will Work for you. So if that’s considered luck it’s played a great role in elevating me higher and higher by the day, weeks and months.
