Meet Shannon Evans and Misty Grant of Nailed It DIY Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Evans and Misty Grant.

Located in the greater Charlotte, NC area, Nailed It DIY Studio began in 2014 when Shannon Evans was asked to share her love for home decor and DIY with the ladies of a local church parish. After working with these ladies, Shannon knew she had an amazing business idea and soon joined forces with another local mom, Misty Grant, who is now her business partner, to open their first retail DIY studio later that year. Together, Shannon and Misty have taken a small idea and turned it into an amazing business in just a few short years. Working with no large corporate investors or PR firms they have made this dream a reality with nothing more than the support of their families, friends and a lot of blood, sweat, and tears.

Nailed It DIY Studio has grown over the last four years to include multiple studio locations in the Carolinas and is now available for franchising across the United States with locations opening soon in Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Indiana. This is the story of two moms with passion, a dream, and the unshakable will to succeed as entrepreneurs. For these ladies it isn’t just about home decor and DIY, it’s about empowering each and every person who walks through their doors with the tools to create something beautiful. We have witnessed people walk in and insist that they couldn’t do this, they weren’t creative or “artsy,” they only came because their friend, wife, daughter, sister, husband, son, brother wanted to do this. And then they begin to choose their project and their paint colors and sand and use drills and nail guns and walk away with something they are proud to say they created. They leave knowing they are creative and capable of doing things they never thought they could. This is the mission of Nailed It DIY.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, but isn’t that the case with any entrepreneur? When we began this journey, there was no road map. In 2014 when we began the DIY studio concept didn’t exist, trust me, we googled it for direction and there was none. So, we took what we did have, which was a passion for DIY and creativity and we created our own path. Every stumbling block along the way has taught us something or redirected us in a way that has moved our business forward in the best way. We now have 12 locations in 6 states and are adding more to that list every day. We may not have gotten where we are as quickly as we would have liked, but we have learned and grown every step of the way and we are proud of that journey.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Nailed It DIY Studio story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a DIY studio where clients come to create custom projects without the hassle of sourcing all the supplies on their own. Imagine walking into a real live Pinterest board with every piece of DIY wall decor you’ve ever pinned right at your fingertips, only you get to choose the style and colors you love and create it with your own hands. But we aren’t just about wooden signs, we also share a variety of DIY projects and hacks on our blog that can help you customize your home on a budget.

As a company, I think we are most proud of the mission behind our studio, which is to empower people to do the things they never thought they could. Often we meet people in the studio who only came because someone invited them and they say things like “I’m not creative” or “I really can’t do this type of thing, I’m just not good at it…” We strive to teach our clients the DIY techniques that don’t come naturally to them and encourage them to take it outside of the studio when they leave and utilize it in their own homes, on their own time. By the end of the class, we see them light up because they realize that they really are creative, they just didn’t know it and that they are capable of doing the things they thought they weren’t capable of. This is what sets us apart, it isn’t just about home decor for us, it’s about teaching and empowering.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
We don’t believe in luck, we believe in hard work. We never had what you would call a “lucky break.” We had an idea, we took a leap of faith and we got to work. Even when we couldn’t see the path ahead of us clearly, we put our heads down and focused on the mission of our business. With that being said we do believe wholeheartedly that throughout this journey trusting God to lead us in the direction we need to go has allowed us to arrive in the exact places, with the exact people we need in our business at the perfect time, every time.
