Today we’d like to introduce you to ShaVonda Lawson.
ShaVonda, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I got started about 1 1/2 years ago. I got the recipe from my grandmother, and I started making crab pies for my friends and one particular friend wanted me to think about selling them, I thought about a name which is Big Momma Crab Pie’s, because it was my Grandmother who really inspired me to cook these pies. So now I own Big Momma Crab Pie’s, which operate on Friday & Saturday’s. My team includes my Mother Rose Mary Fields, Daughter Ja’Keria Lawson & A worker Kenndi Brown, my event prep Frederick Simmons.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The process has been smooth so far, I came a good way from baking pies for my friends to baking pies and cooking other seafood items for people all over the states.
Big Momma Crab Pie’s – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Big Momma Crab Pie’s, specializes in making the Best Crab Pie’s in the South, we create different Seafood items. I proud to be able to see people from South Carolina, Atlanta, North Carolina & Florida come to Savannah and look us up, for our Crab Pie’s. I believe what set us apart from others is because I sell something different many restaurants don’t sell crab Pie’s, my Crab Pie’s are from a past down recipe from my Grandmother & from her Mother.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To me, success means creating a business that empowers Customer’s, employees, and community in equal measure.
