Meet Shimila Stewart of Peerless Safety Consulting Solutions in Kennesaw

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shimila Stewart.

Shimila, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started Peerless Safety Consulting Solutions because this is an area that I am passionate about. Often times, we take safety for granted until an incident occurs that hits close to home. Throughout my adult life, I have worked jobs related to security and Investigations. I have worked security for courthouses, worked security at churches and have worked inside detention facilities climbing all the way to a lieutenant through the ranks. I have always seen areas of improvement in each of these instances; however, sometimes individuals who are in a position of power dismiss your valid issues or concerns. I have been in instances where I see vulnerabilities and ways things could have been prevented but weren’t. Safety has always been something that has been the forefront of any job that I have held.

Providing safety and security go hand and hand. If you ensure safety, it means you should have good security measurements in place. One thing that all of my jobs had in common were staffing issues. I have felt like I was on the other end of staffing incidents because management did not have a clear understanding that 1. All staff are not the same. 2. Learning your staff is essential. 3. Appreciate the good that your staff brings 4. Foster growth of your staff and 5. Utilize strengths of your staff members. Many facilities and businesses create barriers for their staff because they do not necessarily know how to deal with their personalities yet the staff has great performance. I want to advocate for those misunderstood staff members who have potential and I also want to educate and teach businesses on how to deal with various personalities. We live in a very diverse society and not one person is the same. I am from Chicago and because I am very direct, people in the South at times misconstrue that to be rude.

The purpose of Peerless Safety Consulting Solutions is to provide training in various areas by educating the staff as well as the leaders. I believe achieving world-class results and solutions can resolve many of the problematic issues. Currently, we live in a world where people will walk into a place of worship and open fire. What can we do to better prepare ourselves in instances or active shooters? What can we do differently to provide world-class safety and security. Just because you have security guard doesn’t make your church any less vulnerable. Just because you have a security team with earpieces doesn’t take away a threat, it just means they are aware of what they are working with. In addition, we liven a world where are children have to fear for their safety and security while at a school. We deal with detention centers and facilities and daycares who have internal and external issues and threats that need to be addressed.

Many of our local facilities fail in areas of auditing because of staffing issues and a lack of training. The goal of Peerless Safety Consulting Solutions is to provide a detailed analysis, provide services and provide solutions. This business came to exist in July 2018 is when I filed for my EIN; however, I did not actively start my business until September 2019. What propelled me to launch my passion was the many missed opportunities that slipped away and also someone telling me no. Let me elaborate, for the past seven or so years, I have actively attended a local church where I serve on the media ministry and I was on the security team. I was the only female on the team for years. Despite the revolving door on the security team, I was often overlooked for leadership roles on the team. Ideas that I had were often dismissed.

Certain posts, I was never placed on because typically the “men” would have those posts. A few months ago, I brought some concerns to the forefront with the lead of my team to the security director and the assistant director of security. While I thought that matter was resolved and I would be back to business as usual, I was let go of being on the team. I was told if I didn’t do security via camera by identifying people or potential threats then I could not serve. I sent a detailed email to the security leadership with my concerns and even siting the sexist behaviors, norms and attitudes on the team. My email went unanswered, it was at that point I realized, I have the skillset to run a company with high integrity and standards but I also have the education and experience to do so as well. I was determined not to let “leadership” dictate my passion. Hence, I was able to get licensed with the State of Georgia and launch my business in full effect.

Has it been a smooth road?
This has not been a smooth road, as with anything you truly want, you must work hard for it. I think the biggest challenge is getting the support from others. For instance, out of my social media friends, only a handful of people have actually shared my business page that includes Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn. It’s times where you really need the support where you truly see who supports you. I am grateful to my family, friends and sorors of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated who shared my page. I am truly grateful for my friend Tasinda Moody who saw the vision and invested in my vision.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I like best about our city is the diversity. What I like least is the lack of preparation for a tragedy that could occur in any institution, business or facility.
