Meet Shrodrick Spikes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shrodrick Spikes.

Shrodrick, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m an artist, designer, and native of Atlanta, Ga. I was born here, but I moved around the south a lot as a child. I’ve been a creative my entire life. As I got older, I was just able to figure out how I wanted to pursue art as a profession.

College was really my foundation for articulating my style as a professional artist and designer. I first attended Georgia State University. When I was there back in 2009, it was called Georgia Perimeter College. I received my Associate’s degree in Fine Arts from there. After graduating, I moved to Savannah, Ga for two years to attend Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). At SCAD, I received my Bachelors of Arts degree in Graphic Design.

After I was completely finished with college, I began to freelance and work at different internships. It was a fun journey, then I realized I wanted something a bit more financially stable. Now, I’m working as a full-time graphic designer at Bounce TV. It’s based here in Atlanta.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was fairly smooth for the most part. Some ups and downs, but that’s just apart of life and the process. I lost my father in my first year at SCAD. During that time, fitness and my artwork became my therapy. This past April, I put together a solo and self-curated art show entitled Black Phase. It was a five-year retrospective of the artwork I created after his death. For me, it really wasn’t an art show, it was more like an outlet and me finally ending that chapter of my life. Not my father, of course, but my unhealthy mental state.

Shrodrick Spikes, LLC. – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Well Shrodrick Spikes, LLC. is my personal/business brand. It’s upscale, diverse in thought with an artistic approach.

I work with a wide assortment of mediums such as graphic art software, digital photography, glass, acrylic, wood, metal, paint, clay, ceramics, and other nondescript objects. I also work with local companies to help them fulfill any brand identity needs.

I would say I’m mostly known for creating commercial art and design in a contemporary and minimalistic style.
Honestly, I’m proud of being able to wake up every morning and do what I love while getting paid to do it. Everyone doesn’t get that luxury.

I’m not sure what really sets me apart from others. I just try and focus on being a better version of myself.
Speaking of self-care, this is a perfect segue into my other brand I’m relaunching soon. The brand is called
The Astronomy Klub. It is an astronomy-themed creative platform centered around art, design, and wellness.
More details to come. If you like, I can keep you guys posted.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Putting together my solo and self-curated art show in honor of my father.
