Today we’d like to introduce you to Kris Benson.
Kris, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The concept for Superior began when I was still playing Major League Baseball for the Baltimore Orioles back in 2007. I just had season-ending shoulder surgery, and because of the rigorous rehab I started thinking of “what’s next.” I was currently a business management client, was for a total of fifteen years, and I really enjoyed the benefit of having my own business manager and keeping up with my own personal finances. One day, I asked my business manager, “Once I officially retire, what do you think about starting a business management firm of our own?” I always thought it was the Number One service I had as a player, and an underutilized service among athletes. His reply was, “Talk to me when you actually call it a career.” Three years later, I officially retired – in January of 2011 – and set my sights on starting my own business management company. At that particular time, my business manager had some big named clients and he felt a little hesitant on starting a brand-new company. Understanding his side of things, I set out to build this myself.
After a while, I understood I needed more knowledge when it came to running a business, and really know the back-office part of the business management industry. I wasn’t a CPA or Accountant, so I decided to consult with a firm I used to be a client of and learn the business from the inside out. I moved to NYC and sat in the cubicles with the other accountants, and learned everything I needed to learn about the business aspect of becoming a business manager. After a couple years, I reached a plateau in my learning curve there so I decided to go back to my ultimate goal of building my own firm. In January of 2014, Superior was formed and it’s been nothing but a great experience since. We now assist athletes, entertainers, and small business owners around the country with their bookkeeping, accounting, and tax needs.
Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t been easy by any means. There have been ups and downs, good times and bad, and plenty of learning curves. Starting a business from the ground up, with no real business experience, especially starting one – I played baseball for the first 30 years of my life – has its challenges. However, I think what I learned by playing sports at a high-level gave me the ability to stick with it and push through those challenges with hard work and dedication; ultimately, reaching my goals of creating a successful, sustainable, and rewarding business.

I always speak very highly of Atlanta as a business mecca. With so many people and new businesses moving to the area, as well as the newly passed tax incentives in the film, tv, music, and e-gaming industries, Atlanta is going to have a larger and larger impact for many years to come.
