Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzanne Stroup.
Suzanne, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
About three years ago, my business partner Heather Roy and I decided to start our own children’s entertainment company. We’d met working together making magic as princesses, and had some big ideas of our own. A little less than two years ago, Second Star Events was born! We send quality fairy tale and superhero characters out to parties all over the state, along with charity and corporate events. We are so excited to have some incredible partnerships lined up for 2019 and beyond! How lucky am I to be able to say that my job is to create magic?!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been a relatively smooth road. Because we’d worked in the industry for some time, we knew the pitfalls going in. The most difficult part is definitely communication – everyone is so busy and being pulled in so many different directions, sometimes things fall through that you have your heart set on. But for the most part, we’ve been incredibly lucky to work with some wonderful people. Also, because of the nature of the company, we have to spend quite a bit of time and resources on keeping up costumes and wigs, which can sometimes logistically get tricky with last minute bookings.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Second Star Events story. Tell us more about the business.
Second Star Events is one of Atlanta’s favorite princess performer companies. We specialize in sending quality characters to children’s events, whether they be from fairytales, superhero movies or the wizarding world. We have much more content on the horizon!
We’ve been lucky enough to get to work with wonderful organizations like CHOA, Gigi’s Playhouse, the Aurora Theatre, Drawchange, Nanny Brigade and more in the past year and a half.
Personally, I think I’m most proud of the volunteer work we do. Our performers have such huge hearts, and they love making children happy in their free time. I’m also very proud of our wizard parties, where we host an interactive potions class, but that’s my baby! 😉
I think what sets us apart from other companies like ours is the professionalism we show to both clients and our performers. We provide an incredibly high-quality product, and we pay our performers what they deserve. We mainly hire professional actors in Atlanta, and (if I may say so myself) Heather and I have made Second Star one of the best sides hustles an actor can have.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think the biggest way that luck has impacted us is the performers that have auditioned for us. We have such an amazingly talented team, many of which have become our best friends. They work so hard, have the most gentle hearts and truly love the work as much as Heather and I do.
While we’ve definitely had a lot of good luck, I put WAY less stock in luck than in hard work. I hate to be trite, but like Tiana says, “I worked hard for everything I’ve got and that’s the way it’s supposed to be.” Starting and running a successful company in your 20s is difficult, especially since we have many other things going on, both personally and professionally. But Heather and I are a pretty ideal team, and when one of us needs a break for a while, the other steps in and picks up the slack. I’m so lucky to have her.
