Meet Taliah Ayers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taliah Ayers.

Taliah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story starts as a college graduate being offered strenuous jobs at a crap wage that barely had anything to do with my degree. I was grasping at straws when I became certified to teach premarital counseling. Relationships have always been my nerd-out topic. I didn’t want to do anything other than help love-birds find and keep their song in tune. Fast forward three years, a wedding, a house, two kids, two jobs, and some more training, and you have Better Together 365.

BT365 is all about helping couples create and sustain a healthy foundation needed to navigate long term relationships. I believe fruitful relational health shouldn’t only be for those who have the money or the means to obtain it. That is why I keep my costs down through e-sessions and in-home sessions. My pricing is less than half of my counterparts for a reason. Don’t worry. This is not one of those you-get-what-you-pay-for situations. Everything I do is backed by research and proven results.

I had always been doing some work with couples during all of that, but only part-time. I was mostly nurturing my mind and my growing family—two boys under the age of two equals two years of pregnancy and a lot of postpartum depression. After my first son, I got my groove back and began increasing my clientele. I was going to wedding expos and making money doing premarital counseling sessions. Things were great. Have you heard that saying, “If you want to make God laugh, then tell Him your plans”? Yeah, well, God must have thought I was the next big thing about to go across the stage at the Apollo because BOOM, baby boy number two was on the way, and all my plans stopped. Grad school? Yeah right. More clients? Girl, sit down!

After I had my son in September, I was determined to keep my momentum. I even took a business call in the hospital, not even a full 24 hours after he was born. Nothing was going to keep from actualizing the dream that God put on my heart.

Now? I have a handful of couples I regularly see for premarital counseling and relationship education, and I also have three weddings I will be officiating in Fall 2020. My big event this year is a couples retreat in August titled The Luxury of Intimacy. Booked and busy are my two favorite words!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For all businesses, I think the biggest hurdle is getting people to believe what you’re selling, especially for us entrepreneurs who don’t have a physical product. I have to prove that I know what I’m talking about. Add in the stigma surrounding mental health and you have a hot mess to sort through. Premarital counseling is one of those things that everyone thinks is important, but no one thinks they need it! More so the men than the women. I mostly get couples that say the bride stated it as a non-negotiable so the men came kicking and screaming. By the end, the guys are singing my praises, for sure. We’re not digging up problems. We are finding ways to create solutions for the future and building a toolkit, if you will.

As far as personal obstacles go, my postpartum depression was a huge brake. I had functioning depression, which means I was able to go about my daily life, and no one knew I was struggling. My husband tried his best to be there and do what needed to be done, but I needed real mental help. My hormones bottomed out, and all of the extra hands in the world weren’t going to make a difference. With depression comes low libido, so you already know how my marriage was doing at that moment. I had to implement my own practices, and that’s actually how I came up with the theme for my couples retreat.

Please tell us about the company.
BT365 is like no other relationship enrichment company I’ve ever seen. People are most comfortable in their homes, on their couch, in their pajamas, so that is what I offer! I have only had a handful of e-sessions because everyone loves the freedom of being in their own space. I am known for the accessibility my clients have to me. I work with all types of couples! Dating, engaged, married – they only have to be committed to one another and doing the work.

I specialize in premarital work, but it is all about conflict resolution and intimacy building. Those are the main areas that ALL of my couples need the most guidance in, so I make sure to keep that as my sweet spot. Also, I only incorporate religion for the couples who ask for it. I am not someone to push my beliefs onto others. This helps in my officiate services because not everyone believes in God.

I am so proud of being able to say that everything I teach and do comes from proven research. I’m not one of those people that want you to listen because XYZ worked for me. I tell my couples, look over the blueprint that everyone swears by and then throw it in the garbage and set it on fire. Look at one another and base your relationship on each other’s strengths.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I honestly don’t feel like I am doing anything special. I also struggle with Imposter Syndrome, so there is that! I attribute everything I have accomplished to God and His will. There are people who work ten times harder than me and aren’t doing what I am doing. Why? Because I continue to put my faith first, and I am walking in my purpose. I’m about to preach real quick, sorry. When you are walking in someone else’s purpose, you won’t succeed or do as well as you would like, because it isn’t for you. And if you are walking in your purpose but refuse to give God his credit and give Him thanks, you’re essentially building an empire on an unstable foundation. Prepare for the crumble.
