Today we’d like to introduce you to Teela English.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Teela. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Unbeknownst to me, Bossy Marketing had been in the works since 2011. That was my first semester of college at Georgia Gwinnett College. I started studying medicine, but quickly realized my talents in business and marketing while taking an elective class. From that point on I was business bound.
I worked and interned at marketing and branding companies, and then did something really crazy. I enrolled in cosmetology school! It was at this point I found my calling by putting my two passions together, marketing and beauty, and Bossy Marketing was born in 2018. I worked Bossy Marketing part-time while working as a social media manager at a plastic surgery office to gain more experience. While there, I discovered my talents were being underutilized, so I kicked it into high gear. One day after being laid off, I took my last $50 and ran an ad on Instagram, showcasing my logo and website designs. By the end of that day, I flipped $50 in $2,500, and I knew I was doing the right thing. Soon after this overly successful ad ran, I turned Bossy Marketing into a one-stop branding shop for female entrepreneurs.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Heck, no it hasn’t been a smooth road! From layoffs to being out of work for six months, it was quite a stressful ride but I wouldn’t trade it for anything now. I truly feel like I had be on that bumpy road for me to truly appreciate where I’m at today. I never sugarcoat this part of entrepreneurship because it’s important to see the good, bad, and ugly in business. My last position working for someone else left me with low esteem and even questioning my own talent. After I was laid off, I was out of work for almost six months before I picked myself up and started believing in myself again.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Bossy Marketing – what should we know?
I created Bossy Marketing for fellow female bosses. I wanted women business owners to have a safe and fun spot to be creative in their own business. I offer logo design services, custom website designs, brand coaching and consulting, and social media strategies. My specialty will always be beauty branding and marketing because of my cosmetology background, but Bossy Marketing is probably most known for the crazy unique logo designs I create.
I am most proud of this company for just being where it presently is. To know where I started from and the ups and downs I had to get here, it’s just a blessing to be present and still standing. Bossy Marketing isn’t like any other marketing and branding company the world has seen. Most marketing companies offer just a general type of service, but here at Bossy, I truly specialize in serving female bosses and beauty bosses. Not many marketing companies have a CEO with a true background in their specialization, but I can talk about hair and beauty just like I’m standing back behind that salon chair.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Without my mom and dad, Teresa and Homer, I would truly not be here in this position. Sure, they were terrified when I said I was starting this company but they know once I put my mind to it that’s a done deal. Also, my brother Bernard for actually loaning into my business idea. With his help, the new and improved Bossy Marketing would probably still be in the making. My boyfriend was also a great support to the startup of Bossy.
