Meet Theresa Childs of Fabricate Studios

Today we’d like to introduce you to Theresa Childs.

Theresa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In 2013 we opened a small studio to teach kids and adults how to sew. Today we operate a 1600 sq. ft. space with multiple classrooms on Howell Mill Rd. Sewing is still our most popular course offering but we now teach a number of skills-based classes including knitting, hand embroidery, loom weaving, paper crafts and macrame.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Some people are naturally crafty but I think the maker movement has helped fuel our growth. While technology is amazing, nothing beats creating something with your own two hands and we’re using this opportunity to introduce more people to skills that they can utilize for a lifetime.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Fabricate Studios – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Quite simply, we teach skills-based education courses for traditional crafts. Our classes are designed in such a way that you truly learn the skills associated with making a particular project and those skills will allow you to create something different at home on your own. And each instructor is truly an educator and master craftsman, so you’re learning from a veteran. That’s an experience that’s difficult to replicate.

And skill building is just the beginning. Sewing, knitting, hand embroidery, weaving…these skills enrich lives and build community. Sharing your time and your talent in the form of something you wear, a housewarming gift for a friend or as a charitable gift for someone in need, these are character building moments that can’t be replicated with something store-bought. We come together over the course of several sessions to learn these skills and in the process, we build relationship with other crafters that last a lifetime.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We currently we partner with several amazing organizations to provide education to their members. Based on this success we’ve been approached with some new opportunities and can’t wait to unveil them later this year.
