Today we’d like to introduce you to Anisa Mahdi.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always had sort of an obsession with food. Healthy food, in particular. I became vegetarian at 16 years old after reading several books on the health benefits of eating (what’s now known) as a plant-based diet. Granted there was not the wealth of information available compared to now. So, I wasn’t the best at it. I thought that eating french fries and taking the chicken off of Chic-fil-A Chicken salads were a “healthy” vegetarian lifestyle. I’ve learned a lot more over the past few years through research, blogs, and documentaries. I decided to start my own blog, Nourished By Anisa, to share my own experiences and food choices. I show that plant-based living is not only good for your body, but it can also taste incredible. I also believe that we all need to spend a little more time in the kitchen. To truly make time for your well being. And ultimately, doing what’s best for your body is the true definition of health.
Has it been a smooth road?
There have been some challenges for sure. Two of my top challenges have been stress and perfectionism. Not only in my health but multiple facets of my life. At one point, I allowed the stress from work, relationships, unmet plans/goals (perfectionism) affect my health. It took me YEARS to bounce back. This is something I think we all suffer from. This is where I learned whether you have a professional goal, want to lose weight, looking for that right partner, whatever it is – the value of simplicity and trusting the process – ENJOY the process. Otherwise, you could be missing out on some valuable lessons along the way. I’ve learned a lot while working on my blog. It is SO easy to hold back and worry about what others may think of you. I mulled over the idea of Nourished by Anisa for years before I got started. The most important part of any journey is just to start. Don’t wait. Don’t overthink. Plan accordingly, then just go for it.

I am a plant-based recipe developer. I recreate many favorite foods with gluten-free, refined sugar-free, and plant-based ingredients. My specialization? Desserts. I gave up refined sugars years ago and the limited options of my favorite treats caused me to go into the kitchen and recreate them myself. Cakes, cookies, ice cream – you name it- I re-create it. I’m most proud of being able to show people that there are healthier options of some of your favorite treats. Especially those with food sensitivities like me. What’s most unique about my brand is I create recipes for both internal and external health. I create healthy skincare recipes and plant-based recipes. Overall, My goal is to share my experiences in health and wellness through recipes and wellness tips. Ultimately, I would like to have a juice shop offering some of the very recipes I have created.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I feel that there are many opportunities for women today. We are particularly well positioned through social media to tell our own stories. We no longer have to be dependent on traditional media outlets to tell us what is “normal”. I have been inspired by many women in social media. Each woman’s individual story gives us the opportunity to connect, feel, learn from one another and most importantly know that we are not alone in our struggles, joys, and accomplishments. Prime examples, the women’s march, and the #metoomovement. The simplest statement from an individual can affect millions over a short period of time. So, despite much of traditional media coverage focusing on women’s challenges (which is important), we also have many opportunities to reach, grow, and change the narrative for women for many generations to come.
