Meet Trailblazer Briana Morgan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Briana Morgan.

Briana, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been writing for almost as long as I can remember. Growing up, my grandfather fed me a steady diet of stories. Once I learned how to read, I sought out more. I read everything I could get my hands on, devouring the words like they were my last meal.

One day, it dawned to me that I could write my own stories. I could write my own books! The rest, as they say, is history.

Professionally speaking, I majored in English with a concentration in creative writing. I self-published my debut novel, a young adult horror piece called BLOOD AND WATER, in 2015. Then, I put out a one-act play called TOUCH, and a YA urban fantasy called REFLECTIONS. I haven’t stopped moving since.

In addition to writing books, I also run a YouTube channel, where I discuss books, writing, and publishing, as well as providing freelance editing services to small presses and independent authors.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Writing is one of the hardest things in the world to do. No matter how much you do it, you’ll still have difficult days. Sometimes, it’s all I can do to make myself stay in my chair, let alone get any words down.

I wish someone had told me this when I started: Writing is all about discipline. You can’t just write when the inspiration comes. If you want to make a living at it, you have to show up—whether or not you feel like doing so.

Often, the difference between a published author and an unpublished author is the discipline to see a project through. If you’re just starting out, keep that in mind. Talent is one thing, but discipline is another.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
First and foremost, I’m an author. I write young adult books, specializing in horror and urban fantasy. I love writing scary stories with a touch of heart. I also have a great deal of experience and training in all levels of editing, as well as the knowledge of what makes a book “successful.”

Which women have inspired you in your life?
So many women have inspired me throughout my life. My mom, of course, who taught me that I could do anything I set my mind to. My grandmother, who remains positive no matter what life throws at her, and seldom has an unkind word for anyone. Two of my high school English teachers, who taught me grammar and believed in my ability to succeed.

Likewise, I am constantly inspired by my friends, both online and off. The online writing community is one of the most positive spaces I’ve ever belonged to, and I wouldn’t be where I am now without its support. Offline, I make it a point to surround myself with powerful women who believe in me, support me, and love me through whatever happens. Sometimes, they believe in me more than I do myself.

I cannot stress the importance of a strong support system enough. The best thing you can do for your burgeoning career—and for your mental and emotional wellbeing—is to fill your life with people who love you, believe in you, and want the best for you, no matter what. Trust me.
