Today we’d like to introduce you to Haley de St Germain.
Haley, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It started when I was living in New Orleans -I grew up dancing competitively since I was 3 & so with dance, I was required to wear (a looot) of makeup, for stage presence. I believe it’s then, that I started to fall in love with makeup. As I got older, I would practice on my teammates & even after Katrina hit and we were forced to move to Georgia, makeup always remained as something that I was passionate about. I began to take extra classes at a school during high school in order to get college credits & then went to college for cosmetology. While all of my friends went off to university, I knew what I wanted and I knew even though I would “miss out” on the sororities and the parties, I knew my passion was makeup. It was then that I applied to the Walt Disney World Company & was able to take my experience to the next level and work as a fairy godmother in training in the Cinderella Castle. It was the most magical job ever.
Being in Orlando was such a great experience, but when I moved back to ATL, I wanted more. I always want to be more and make the most of myself. So, I went after Sephora and also applied for bare minerals as a backup- unfortunately, I didn’t hear from Sephora -but I was desperate to be working again and Bare Minerals came to the rescue! I was hired! But it wasn’t what I expected… I began to question my love for makeup… I began to question my abilities as an artist… and it was tough. To say the least. So, I called Sephora, seeing as I hadn’t heard from them and it had only been a couple of months since my application — And to my surprise… they offered me an interview!! And I got it!! It was there that I realized how much I DO love makeup and it was there that I learned all that I know today! I was a certified artist and I also taught the classes at Sephora – an absolute dream. I will always appreciate the time spent there! In addition to my full time, jobs-I have always done makeup for events, weddings, proms, homecomings, fashion shows at the Mart in ATL, etc. It means so much to me to be able to make people feel beautiful. And expressing that through makeup is my favorite way of doing that!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not at all. It never has been. I have been ripped off, chewed out by clients, I have given all my free time away to chase my dreams – but it has been SO worth it. If you want something, you have to be willing to put in the time and effort to make it what you want it to be. Don’t ever give up. Everyone starts somewhere. 💕
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am proud of myself for the versatility of my work. Again, ive worked for huge companies such as Sephora and the Walt Disney World Company-to designers such as Rachel Allen. I have worked with all races of women or men. I have about seven years of experience, but I am still going after it! I wouldn’t say I “specialize” in anything because I strive to be the jack of all trades. If I had to pick, I would probably say brows & eyes are my thing.
Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
I enjoy listening to podcasts but I love music. I believe if you have the right music going in the background that makes YOU feel creative, you can create anything!
