Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Martins.
Sam, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always had a creative niche. My story starts in high school. I moved to different schools and was desperate to make new friends and have a fresh new start. My older twin sisters gave me a makeover, so I could start a new chapter at a new school. From that moment on, I have always been in love with the thrill of a transformation. Make-up became a way I could transform myself. While I was in high school, people would ask me to do prom make up and so that’s really where I found my passion for my craft. Once I graduated from high school, I got the amazing opportunity to be a permanent artist at MAC Cosmetics. I was able to move through the company and really really find my passion for makeup all over again. I was able to cultivate my craft. I was able to also meet and develop close relationships with all different types of people from different backgrounds and ethnicities. After three years of working at MAC cosmetics, I realized I wanted more from my artistry. I decided to quit my permanent and steady paying job to take the freelance industry as a self-employed make-up artist. I worked hard and obtained my business license. Becoming a freelance makeup artist and having my own business has so many benefits but also has its obstacles. However, I am completely happy with my decision. Taking a risk in myself has been so rewarding, from this journey, I created Illustrious Looks. A full-service make-up artistry company that I am so proud of!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have definitely been some obstacles in the road but I continue to have my faith and trust my craft to lead me to success. One obstacle that I’ve faced would be maintaining a steady and consistent clientele.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a freelance makeup artist. I specialize in glam and natural makeup. I feel like my worth ethic, as well as my professionalism, sets me apart from others in my field. I also have a true passion for my craft. I get extremely joyful once I finish a makeover and my client is completely in love with the finished look.
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
I feel like having older sisters who were constantly getting ready and doing their make up definitely inspired me to get into makeup. My sisters were always giving me a makeover and allowing me to play in my make up it was only natural for me to take part.
