Meet Trailblazer Venus Thomas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Venus Thomas.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am the mom/wifepreneur behind the brand 365 Body Love, which started as happenstance! My husband and I are married with three children (15, 11, and 4). Two of our three children had severe eczema and our eldest daughter had typical teen acne. We were constantly using prescription based steroid and topical creams to help with the flare-ups. I would notice that over time the skin where we applied the cream started to appear light in color and much thinner, hence the effects of many steroid creams. We quickly realized that our kids were receiving temporary relief with no long term benefits. Every time the season would change, allergies or new soap there would be a flare-up. Nothing was working, not even the best natural skincare options I purchased such as the over the counter usual’s, (Dove, Cetaphil, etcetera).

One day, I was doing some research on natural homeopathic ways to help provide relief to my kid’s eczema and typical hormonal acne in teens. With trial and error, I created a small batch of what I now call “relief butter and an activated charcoal scrub and soap!” After two uses of the relief butter, I noticed an immediate change in their skin and the frequency of flare-ups. Our eldest daughter after using the activated charcoal scrub and soap combo for about a week, also begin to notice her skin was clearing up and she was not having as many breakouts. I didn’t think I was on to anything, as we did the normal routines (drink water, less dairy, etc.) until family and friends begin to ask me about making them some. Still, I remained in a “mommy mode” just making something to help with the horrible flare-ups until close family said you should really look at selling it. One jar turned into five and the orders kept coming in and many were repeat buyers. I knew then maybe I was on to something and starting really researching and thinking about turning it into a small business. 365 Body Love was birthed, hence thinking of ways we could use natural based products 365 days of the year. I was able to really think about what my family was using on their skin and how I could transform our house from store purchased items to everything being handmade. Two years later, we are steadily growing and everything we use I personally handcraft by hand.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Absolutely not! There are days you question everything, from getting over your head in orders to turning your house into a storage/store to having sleepless nights! Many nights are spent researching and trying to identify how to be the best at what you do while maintaining integrity against some of the larger brands. It is hard because people are accustomed to purchasing skincare products at their local stores, but few stop to take a moment to google the ingredients. I always tell people, it’s not about me selling a product but more about getting you to question what you are using and why? Any advice I would recommend would be to keep you a notebook. Write everything down, set goals for yourself and don’t be afraid to question everything! Your business is your temple and you should treat it as such, don’t be afraid to be different and try not to compare yourself to others. Everyone’s journey is different…don’t give up and always pray over your business.

We serve as a face+body family oriented business. Everything I create can be used for the entire family from, soaps, body butters, oils, scrubs, hair butters/oils, lip balms, etc. I am most proud of my consistency to always be good, better best! Always looking for ways to improve and provide skincare options for an array of demographics, while maintain integrity. My proudest moment is really seeing my “relief butter” transform so many kids and adults who have not been able to find relief with their eczema. Each case is different, but I truly believe that in my heart, “relief butter” has been a blessing not only to my family but for many others as well. I take great pride in using organic and chemically free ingredients that allow for more natural products. My goal is to show my girls that we all are different and that’s okay, but at the core of it all, you should have the highest love for yourself (body love… both physically and mentally). Self-esteem affects us all differently and if I can be a small blessing along the way then I feel like I am doing something right.

Each product is also made with love and carefully inspected and packaged before shipping to ensure integrity continues from the start of the order until the customer receives it, uses it and hopefully loves it!

Which women have inspired you in your life?
I have had a strong village of women who have prayed with me, come to my house to help prep orders, make orders, being my testers or just a sounding board for ideas. These women have helped keep me grounded, but also pushed me to keep going on the late nights when I want to give up. There have been many but the following women have been the closest and near and dear (Deborah Jones, Dionne Mahaffey-Muhammad, Evangeline Greene, Aisha DeBerry, Veronica Stewart, Titika Mckinney Hill, Christina Carter, April Jones, Atoya Liggins, and Kara Stokes just to name a few) who have all sowed into me since onset. They have been my biggest promoters, marketers, research team but most importantly encouraged and pushed me to higher levels. When I have felt defeated, they have given me needed stern sisterly talks, allowed me to cry, but in the end, reminded me on why I started in the beginning and that I have so much more to do. They have sowed into my business both personally, financially and professionally to ensure I am the best version I can be for my business and family.
