Today we’d like to introduce you to Versandra Kennebrew.
Versandra, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As a young overworked African American woman raising two children working 50-60 hours a week, climbing the corporate ladder, my health became compromised. While recovering from what doctors considered minor surgery I began to consider my purpose in life. I no longer wanted to work every day, all day just to survive. I wanted to live my life on purpose and I wanted to see the world.
As I put into action my plan to transition into my new career and life’s purpose as a healing artist, my dad was diagnosed with cancer. I relocated from the Washington D.C. area back home to Detroit to care for him. Still discovering my life’s path, I studied massage therapy and a variety of holistic health modalities from around the world. Providing on-site corporate massage at Blue Cross Blue Shield, Ford Motor Company World Headquarters, and the City of Detroit while serving celebrity clients like Les Brown, Tommy Davidson, Kirk Whalum, and Dee Dee Bridgewater to name a few, I became well-known in my hometown as a healing artist. My social media activity opened up opportunities for me to speak and teach across the U.S. and Canada. Amidst living my passion, I was also balancing serving my community as I owned a holistic wellness center.
As my passion for exploring and touching the world became stronger, I relocated to “Hotlanta” (where winter is over in three-months or less), continued my holistic health studies at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition while launching “Health & Healing Chronicles” via the airwaves on WRFG Atlanta 89.3FM with The Witch Doctor. Three-years of co-hosting one of the longest-running community radio programs Night Watch Expressions gave me a platform to share the stories of healing artists from Atlanta and around the world, and empower people to try a holistic lifestyle to manage stress, chronic disease, and mental health. My Atlanta based company VKI Personal Development provides holistic health education, products, and services to support optimal living at work and at play.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Over the past 20-years, my company which began as a private massage practice, has evolved. A local business idea has become my legacy. What started with a dream, a massage table, and some essential oils, has taken me from mansions to a homeless shelter to beaches and beautiful places around the world.
The experiences of sleeping in my office when I couldn’t afford to pay two rents and rallying the support of my clients to provide a home for teen girls in Detroit who aged out of foster care have given me a different perspective about my business model and the role of VKI Personal Development in the world. The struggles I have experienced in building a lifestyle business have taught me to become an extraordinary leader.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career so far was being invited to speak at Le Rendez Vous, a massage therapy conference in Montreal, QC. This invitation to speak to a predominantly French-speaking audience about the importance of choosing the right coach for their business success let me know that my work had crossed the barriers of language, race, and international borders. It was also my highest paid speaking engagement to date. I had a translator and an escort who took me shopping and to the Montreux Jazz Festival. How cool is that?
