Today we’d like to introduce you to Yasna Grainger and Christy LeJeune.
Yasna and Christy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
What started as a fun passion for vintage finds between two friends turned into a charming booth in the historic Planters Walk Antique Mall in McDonough. Southern Charm was born from the appreciation of vintage, unusual items and the love of bringing life to old items. The friends are Yasna Grainger and Christy LeJeune and they are about to celebrate their second anniversary as booth vendors.
The Southern Charm girls started with a small booth, and have moved twice, to larger booths since. They offer hand-crafted items, refurbished furniture, and antiques, which they soon realized that their fan base loved it too! Each of the girls has their own hand-crafted signature item. Christy handcrafts farmhouse style signs and Yasna creates wreaths made out of old dictionaries and classic books. Each of their hobbies was paired up with the thrill of treasure hunting for vintage items.
One of their main objectives when searching for treasures is that they must love it enough to be able to add it to their own homes. They only take home items that “speak” to them. The problem is when the item speaks to both of them equally, which they normally resolve very peacefully. One of Yasna’s favorite item in the booth is a 1930’s vintage typewriter, which she refuses to sell, but it adds so much charm to the booth. They love pieces that generate nostalgia, and they believe that is why customers keep coming back. Their vintage farmhouse style reminds customers of their childhood and especially of grandma’s house.
If you happen to stop by, make sure you sign their guestbook. The girls appreciate everyone who visits, what they call, their “happy place.” Southern Charm speaks for itself, it is indeed very charming!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Our biggest struggle was getting the word out. Many McDonough residents who have lived in the town for many years, were not even aware of an antique mall being in their town. So word of mouth and social media were and are a very big part of the equation. Our repeat customers are the best, and we appreciate their continued support.
Please tell us about Southern Charm McDonough.
In addition to how we got started, we are very proud to have increased the presence of two charities that were started by Yasna Grainger. Our town, like many, have their struggles. One of the main struggles that Yasna deals with is the fact of the homelessness in her own county. There are reported that over 1100 children are considered homeless.
Yasna started the Warm & Toasty drive and the #cerealboxchallenge, where she collected all NEW scarves/hats/gloves, socks and blankets, and yes, cereal, to benefit crisis shelters, homeless initiatives, and food pantries. Since opening up Southern Charm, their reach and their support have increased tremendously. In the past seven years, along with the help of the community, the collected items increased from a few hundred to now, thousands! Yasna attributes the enormous response to a very giving community who have embraced both charities with open arms. The donated items have helped many children, families, and the homeless.
The most important thing is that these charities continue to raise awareness of the homelessness that exists very close to home. Southern Charm is a proud sponsor of the charities, and welcome any and all to partner up or simply make a donation of least one item. Together, we can help lift others up!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
We would have considered larger homes! Having to store items can be a difficult process if you don’t have the adequate storage space. We both have had to hold back and purchases due to limited storage.
