Rising Stars: Meet Abiye Fubara

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abiye Fubara.

Abiye, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my musical journey at a young age playing drums and just five years old. Growing up in the church I was surrounded by music. I gained an interest in music production at around ten years old making beats on my parent’s Yamaha keyboard workstation and saving the beats on floppy disk. Around 13 after seeing me make beats on my mom’s old desktop, my uncle who was already deep in the music business gifted me my first laptop where I began to create beats and grow my craft. I pursued a degree at Catawba College in music business where I made multiple connections within my circle of like-minded musician friends; many who are still working in the music industry to this day. After graduating I decided to pursue my passion in the Atlanta area where I was able to network and grow. I currently am a full-time gigging musician and producer playing in multiple bands and continuously growing my catalogue of artist collaborations.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been an easy journey by far, but I can’t deny that I have been fortunate enough to have people around me who have assisted in making my journey as painless as possible. When first moving out to atlanta I was a full-time daycare music teacher which was not a path I ever saw myself going on. Besides playing in church, my only other outlet was making beats in my room for my first two years of being out here. It took commitment to working on my craft, doing the footwork and networking any chance I could, and belief that consistency will be rewarded with results for me to see a return on my investment in myself.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I currently am the MD (music director) for a party band named Hi Def. I produce for artists, tv and movie sync licensing, and score music. I’m a sample curator for Melodic Mindz. I am also one of the founders of Session 9, a platform for musicians and artist to showcase their talent and ability through live performances, interviews, and quality content. I also play for church and local bars and clubs. I specialize in R&B, trapsoul, and conscious rap production, but I can safely say that I can make music for any genre that is presented to me. I’m most proud of how I’ve been able to dip my hand in multiple streams of income within the music streams in order to support myself and continue to do what I love on my own time. I feel as though my experience in live performance, my ability to play multiple instruments, and my ear to hear music and break it down really set apart my sound from other producers. Even my personal music preferences are a melting pot of different genres and styles and that in turn is displayed in my overall sound.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I believe in calculated risk taking. You never want to jump into anything without weighing out the risk and rewards. When deciding to move out to atlanta I knew that there were risks involved with leaving my family, my comfort zone, and moving to a place that was incredibly more expensive than my hometown in angier nc. I made sure to have a backup plan but I also made sure to bet on myself and make sure that my work ethic was fine tuned in order to make the most out of this journey. I believe it is always important to believe in yourself and do what it takes to make that belief a reality, but I also believe that planning and strategic movements play a critical role in the overall success of those calculated risk.
