Today we’d like to introduce you to Breitani Turner.
Breitani, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My professional background is actually in education. I dabbled with photography here and there when I was younger but it was really nothing serious, just photos of myself, friends or family. After I signed with my Mother Agency, I decided I needed to upgrade my camera equipment for auditions but I often found myself wanting to continue creating videos and photos even after my audition was complete. I started coming up with themes for photoshoots and short video clips and began shooting videos of other talents from my agency as a hobby. I fell in love with the art of photography during this time. I decided that it’d be great if I could turn this into a business and here I am 3 years later.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been rewarding but it definitely has not been easy. There are a couple of struggles along the road towards becoming a photographer but also a business owner. Some of the struggles that I have discovered on my journey towards becoming are things like “imposter syndrome”, feeling pressured to niche down, figuring out what that niche is and developing an individual style. One struggle that I experienced early on in my career was learning how to attract a steady stream of clientele in an already oversaturated market. Once things started rolling and the perseverance and hard work paid off, I knew the struggle wasn’t in vain, lol.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Initially, I started only offering fashion photoshoots and headshot sessions but as time has gone on, I’ve come to realize that I just love photography, period. I now offer fashion, lifestyle/branding and family photoshoot sessions. I am most proud of the fact that I’ve learned how to adapt to situations where it may seem like there aren’t many resources or options for a great shoot but because of my experience in the field, I know how to see the potential in locations. I think what sets me apart from others is what sets a lot of other photographers apart from one another, personal style. Clients probably just don’t view one photographer’s portfolio and decide to book. When a client looks for a photographer that fits their needs, they are looking at the photographer’s style and choosing the photographer whose unique style fits their needs.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the fact that it is a growing city. There are a variety of places to do creative shoots. The murals on the buildings, the city skyline, the hustle and bustle of downtown all make for beautiful backdrops. I could do without the traffic, lol!
