Rising Stars: Meet Chris Epps

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Epps.

Hi Chris, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Originally I was born in Queens, New York but raised on Long Island. I spent my adolescent years in Amityville (yes… home of the infamous “Amityville Horror House”… yup, THAT Amityville. lol), where I always found myself surrounded by creative synergy. Amityville was home to many prominent, well-known musicians, singers, actors/actresses such as Hip-Hop Pioneers DJ Prince Paul of The Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, in the Gospel music genre, home to the Legendary Donnie McClurkin, Melonie Daniels and a host more of accomplished talented individuals.

It just so happened Melonie Daniels & I attended the same church where she served as our Youth Choir Director and as time moved forward, Melonie took me under her wings and wherever Mel went, there was I.

During such time Melonie, was hired as Background-Vocalist for a fairly new artist from our neighboring town of Huntington, who was being featured on a fairly new MTV series-special called “MTV Unplugged”, and that said artist is known today as the Iconic Mariah Carey. Following the taping of Mariah Carey’s MTV Unplugged special, Melonie was one of the BGV’s Mariah kept and Melonie continued on working with Mariah for over two decades. As a result of Melonie & I relationship, music being my first love, as an adolescent there were moments I was afforded up close & personal glimpses of both the “secular” as well as the Gospel music/entertainment industry which ignitied my passion.

However, after graduating from high school I left New York and relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, where I would live for a number of years. Having been immersed in the arts during my adolescent years, I began to hone my own talents propelling my creative talents as singer, songwriter, producer, and even becoming an executive producer for other talents I’d later cross paths with.

In 2011 I wrote, produced and independently released my debut project, “Here I Am…” under my own label imprint ChrisEppsMusic. After successfully releasing my debut project, I diligently began building my own relationships within the music/entertainment industry I was once just an observer of.

Fast Forward to 2014, three years after successfully launching my debut LP and, leveraging the art of networking, I was afforded the opportunity as a Songwriter and Executive Producer to produce the debut EP entitled “I’ll Go” for Jamarien Moore, who at the time a top ten-finalist on BET’s hit television series Sunday’s Best! His debut single “SuperMercy” co-written and co-produced by yours truly debut on the Billboard Gospel Top 100 charts.

Stepping out on faith, later that same year I decided to relocate to Atlanta, Georgia. Maybe after my first year living in Atlanta, and the success of “I’ll Go”, I elected to take a sabbatical from the music/entertainment industry for a couple of years to simply enjoy the fruits of my labor and live!

In 2017, I re-emerged as cast member and executive producer on a web-series called “The Social Breakdown”. Due to the success of the web-series debut episode, as a cast, The Social Breakdown were afforded an opportunity to host our own weekly radio show under the same name by Kluster Media Group. Although we were experiencing a moderate level of success in radio, The Social Breakdown as a collective decided to amicably dissolve the web/radio series shortly thereafter. Due to new endevors, our individual goals, prior commitments, the timing just wasn’t a fit as a collective to operate in Black Excellence and fully honor our commitment to the radio station by keeping our radio show fresh, new, exciting, and on the cutting-edge.

However, later that same week post dissolving The Social Breakdown, I was approached by the Program Director of Kluster Media Group and offered my very own weekly LIVE spin-off radio show, still airing each and every Saturday from 11am-1pm{est} on Atlanta’s Hott R&B Station Hott923 on iHeartRadio known as “Chris Epps Presents…”!

That’s my introduction, journey and evolution thereof setting me on the course of becoming a media mogul.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As the creator, producer and host of “Chris Epps Presents…”, one of Atlanta’s thriving national radio broadcast on iHeartRadio, aside from featuring celebrity guest exclusive interviews with the likes of The First Lady of R&B Faith Evans, The Queen of Comedy Sommore, Avery Sunshine, Tank & The Bangas, Tamika Mallory and a host more, there are a plethora of challenges to overcome trying to keep a level of balance on the show.

We do not shy away from very sensitive topics, in fact we unapologetically tackle them head-on from racial/gender inequality, LGBTQ+ rights, proper pronouns and definitions thereof, voter suppression House Bill proposals, specifically geared towards suppressing the Black & Brown vote, to the nations civil unrest and senseless murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks, George Floyd amongst the countless others…to often offered minimal to no justice as victims.

It makes it very uneasy in those moments to keep the balance of an ordinary upbeat show. My co-host Cassie J., Corliss, Tekoa, & Karis and I ALL feel compelled more often than not, to effectively leverage this platform we’re afforded thru “Chris Epps Presents…” on Atlanta’s Hott R&B Station Hott923 on iHeartRadio to effectively continue the conversation to combat social injustices, systemic racism, and inequality as a whole.

Yet, we somehow find the balance of bringing humor to the show, particularly through the show’s resident comedian Jenn Weeks! Jenn Weeks joins the show on a bi-monthly basis with her segment entitled “Jenn Weeks Weak!” offering her impeccable comedic timing, unique wit and hilarious storytelling ability making light of the most bizarre news stories down to personal real life experiences…lol…somehow we make it all work but it’s certainly not an “easy path” by no stretch of the imagination.

We even bring on subject matter experts from Clinical Social Work Therapist, Financial Specialist/Guru’s, Relationship Experts to our very own resident Political Pundit Ahmad Goree out of Dallas, Texas all to help maintain balance of our perspectives to the varied topics and conversations we discuss.

We entertain while we educate and we educate while we entertain.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As an Artist—I set myself apart by continuously honing my craft and always making sure my business is properly handled.

“Here I Am…” released in 2011, still 2021 pays a light bill or two from the quarterly checks received from streaming services due to my music being readily available via all major online retailers (i.e. Spotify, Apple Music, etc), wheresonevers streaming platform you as a consumer like to leverage it’s there for your listening pleasure.

As a show host and radio personality—I make sure broadcast topics, music, guest, and approach stays relative and often ahead of the curve on the cutting edge destin for greatness.

We recently expanded our branding footprint launching the Chris Epps Presents.. Limited Edition Logo Hoodie’s apparel line via under our “Products/Apparel”.

Just a few examples how I continue to set myself apart and operate in excellence.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I love about Atlanta are the endless opportunities, the ability to shape and define your calling, purpose and career, are endless in Atlanta if you’re serious and remain focused.

What I don’t love about Atlanta… especially when outside fully reopens, it takes an hour just to go three miles! I do not love the TRAFFIC! lol
