Rising Stars: Meet Dru Phillips Phillips

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dru Phillips Phillips.

Hi Dru, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
My story begins with me being challenged in high school by my art teacher Mrs. Cohen and her having enough faith in me to help me see my talent in art. If it was not for her, I would probably not be where I am today. Fast forward to today I have undergrad and grad degrees from SCAD and a career in the arts.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The road of the artist is never smooth. Dealing with financial issues, trying to make your name in the fine art world and commercial world. Trying to come up with fresh ideas but being cautious to put them out because bigger more established artists could steal your ideas and put them out as their ideas. I don’t think the struggles ever go away. They just change titles.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am known for my cosplay photography. I have been featured on a few shows such as Heroes of Cosplay on SiFi and I have had my images on Cosplay products in other countries. I have also recently been featured in an award-winning documentary called Cosplay Your Way in Color.

I am most proud of how I am a go-to for a lot of cosplayers of color. I have heard a number of situations where POC cosplayers are ignored or not given the same attention as the non-POC cosplayers. So, me being the one that will provide quality content for them makes me feel really good.

I think the thing that sets me apart from others is my personality. I am just a people person and I love to make people happy.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of my favorite childhood memories was my mom getting me a He-Man toy when we were in Manhattan but then I think I left it on the train on the way home.
