Today we’d like to introduce you to Eboni Burden.
Hi Eboni, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I lost my job in March 2020 due to covid. In August 2020, I asked my friend if I could do her daughter’s balloon garland for her birthday. I had not touched a balloon a day in my life other than blowing it up by my mouth and throwing them in the floor for a celebration. The struggle was real that night, but after jokingly posting on Facebook, I started getting hits and from that day forward, it has become my main source of income. Many seasons have come where things were very slow, but because I love being able to create and the freedom it gives me to be a mom, I haven’t given up yet. Has the thought of taking a step back and going back into the workforce come up, of course. In fact, I have many days where I’m motivated and I’m like “I got this.” And then sometimes I get overwhelmed and something doesn’t go right, causing me to question everything about myself and this business.
My daughter Gracelynn, which is where Grace Designs has originated from, is why all of this started. I once saw a post that said the meaning of “being rich,” is different for everyone. For me “being rich,” isn’t about having all of the money in the world but it’s about being able to be there and watch my daughter grow up and not miss out on different stages in her life because I’m working long hours for someone else. This industry does call for long hours but at least she is able to be there with me and I can cut it on and cut it off as needed. I know having Faith in a business that just does “balloons” may not be ideal for some, but I pray that I can expand, hire, allocate and thrive off of the opportunities that are to come for us.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It started out fun and it still is but now I’m at a place where I want more for my daughter and I and sometimes I worry, I become doubtful, anxious, or overwhelmed. It’s hard doing it by yourself and don’t get me wrong, my family and friends do help but they can only help to a certain extent because they have their own lives.
Finances can take a toll as well because you either have clients who will pay or you have clients who don’t want to pay.
Also, there are clients who try to tell you how you should run your business instead of respecting what you say.
As mentioned before giving up or taking a break has been thought of, but being that this is my main source of income to provide for us, I can’t just give up because of a bump in the road.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Grace Designs Events and Decor, LLC is known for adding a pop of balloons to your events whether it is a birthday, a wedding, an anniversary, grand opening; we can do it. I have been in business for two years, starting in August 2022.
We do offer marquee number and letter rentals, shimmer walls (black, iridescent, and champagne gold), as well as decorative backdrop panels. We are looking to expand into doing full decor setups.
One thing I’m most proud of is the fact that I haven’t given up. I have put myself in positions to have approximately 3 businesses over the years and none of them have made it to the six months mark. It was worked on but I just never put forth the effort to keep going.
I pray that I find help from an individual with the same passion and drive for this industry as me and Grace Designs become bigger than I’ve ever imagined.
We will still continue to celebrate the small wins.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
There are a lot of talented individuals here and I enjoy watching everyone flourish. Clapping for them always and wanting to learn from them.
People want a lot for nothing. You can’t possibly think that doing balloons is “easy,” because if it was, then you wouldn’t have hired me to do it for you. Pay people what they ask for. You will not bargain at any store in the mall, the grocery store ever. You just pay the price. Balloons are a luxury and you don’t have to have them, but just like you save up for things you want to do the same for your events so no one is forced to cut corners.
