Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Colvin.
Brittany, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I was born in Baltimore MD. Then shortly after relocated to Washington DC. I am 29 years old, and I have always been in fashion. I can remember as far back as playing with Barbie’s cutting up their clothing to recreate a new and fashionable look or playing dress up with my friends in my mother or grandmother clothes. As a child, I use to change my outfits six times a day and put on little fashion shows around the house.
As I got older and really started to pay more attention to details as far as what I was wearing to school & what color to dye my hair this week I started to get more creative and also started taking my fashions more serious.I remember starting a trend in DC with one of my best friends cutting up two pairs of jeans making them one wide leg pair and wearing multiple layers of clothing. I always stood out as a wild child when it came to my looks as some of my teachers and peers would call me. As I got older putting looks together became less of a hobby and more of a career path for me.
I dressed my friends then eventually started to get clients that were interested in me creating looks for them & I actually got paid to do it! I took a trip to New York one year to visit a friend and met a guy who was a shoemaker who had clients such as Bruno Mars, Nicki Minaj, etc. . The initial conversation started by a compliment of my clothes and a followed up question of what I wanted to do in the future, from there we connected and began to create together me as the stylist and him as the shoe designer and photographer. I worked alongside him traveling back and forth to New York or him to DC. I started setting up my shoots with models in the DC area and some of my friends that where aspiring models as well. Then the big move came ! Randomly I wasn’t happy with my environment anymore it seemed as though everything was going downhill.I lost my little brother & oldest cousin to a senseless act of violence and my grandfather from a heart attack right in my face, which was the closest death to me I ever had to experience, then I lost my job at Starbucks, and at the club, I was bartending at.
I was just ready for a change. I set a date for myself which was October 21, 2015 that I was gonna move to Atlanta, knowing nothing about Atlanta and had only visited once when that date came I packed up my car and my mom’s car, and we drove me down. A leap of faith is definitely what I call my move. Coming to a new city with no connects, little money, only knowing I wanted more for myself but having no plan just faith put me where I am today. When I first got to Atlanta, I used to get dress and go walk Lenox mall because that was the only landmark I knew of here. I eventually picked up a job at Club Onyx as a bottle girl and Soul Bar at Pals as a bartender. I started meeting people and sharing my interest in what I do, and wow situations fell right in my lap. I’ve been in Atlanta for three years and have had the pleasure to work with or alongside numerous artists such as Young Scooter, Future, Young Thug, TK Kravitz, Jacob Latimore, Lil Boosie, Yung Blue, Shy Glizzy, Money Bagg Yo, YFN Lucci and etc. My styling career has definitely grown and is still flourishing, and I am now also the owner of my own LLC business which is an online boutique by the name of BMichae`.
