Today we’d like to introduce you to Dianne Price.
Dianne, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
In early 2009, out of the blue, I felt inspired to purchase 20 antique sari’s. I constructed several simple tops from these colorful silk sari’s. I’m very appreciative that Range Boutique gave me the opportunity to put them in her boutique and nine years later I continue to sell my pieces there. After designing with antique sari’s for a while I needed something fresh, so began searching for patterned silk fabrics, but no luck finding patterns that I liked. Necessity being the mother of invention, I decided to try my hand at dyeing, and began designing the fabric myself. Now, I exclusively dye all of my own fabric and its become the most satisfying part of what I do, taking something totally blank and making it into something beautiful and wearable. I create fabrics in colors and patterns that I love, and I am always in awe when others appreciate them too. It’s gratifying and humbling to see someone wearing something I made, and I never take that for granted. In addition, I make my own patterns and do my own sewing. I work exclusively with natural fabrics such as silk, linen, silk velvet, leather, and cashmere.
I’ve always been drawn to unstructured style. My designs are unique and one of a kind, with each piece focusing on the art of the fabric, the beauty and mixture of colors and the feel and texture of the silk etc. Inspiration comes from the natural beauty all around us to which there is no limit.
As an artist, I’m compelled to branch out into other forms of art that inspire me. At the beginning of last year, I created a new line of wall hangings using driftwood and feathers. These wall hangings are always evolving as new ideas come to me.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I love the process of taking a blank piece of fabric and turning it into something interesting and unique. It fascinates me to see how colors mix together and come to life. I’m constantly working on new techniques of dyeing. I tend to be a perfectionist, and have to remind myself that the little imperfections are what makes a piece special. Many times something turns out totally different than what I thought it would, and I’ve learned to work with it. Sometimes these even turn out to be my favorites. As for what I want people to take away from it: Plain and simply, I just want them to feel good when wearing one of my pieces.
How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
I think success as an artist comes only when you’re true to yourself. Just do your thing, and some people will “get it” and some won’t. Its also imperative that you have persistence. The more you do something, the better you get at it. Don’t quit.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I’m very blessed to have so many people support my work by purchasing and wearing it and repeatedly buying new pieces.
