Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Jones.
Katie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always loved art in various forms. I began dancing at age five and developed an interest in painting as early as elementary school. I have been interested in owning an art gallery since my sophomore year in college but never thought I would be owning a gallery in Buckhead at age twenty-three. I graduated from Birmingham-Southern College this past May. I entered school as an art major, and after some coaching from my Dad, I came out with a major in Business Administration, Bachelor of Arts, and a minor in Art History. While in school, I kept hearing about Hutton Snellings and Buckhead Art & Company. After reaching out to her several times, I waited until Hutton finally answered my call, and said: “We start Monday.” I cherish the time Hutton gave to me and wouldn’t trade a minute in the gallery learning from her. Hutton challenged me and helped me realize the arts were the direction for me to go. I didn’t have much luck with jobs in the artistic realm as they seem to be few and far between. After graduation, I spent a brief period in Software Sales Recruiting. My weekends were spent in the gallery, and I knew that’s where I really wanted to be. As time went by, Hutton realized that she was ready to be painting again. She told me I was the only person who cared about Buckhead Art & Company as much as she did. After saying many prayers, I decided to take a leap of faith and go after my dream. I am honored to be representing such talented artists, and I hope to make them proud.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, the road has not been smooth, and I’ve often wondered if I am doing the right thing, but I gain more confidence each day. I keep trying to remind myself that God’s got a plan and we must trust in it. We can only take on one day at a time. If you love what you do and dedicate yourself to it, eventually it will work out if it’s what God has in plan for you.
Please tell us about Buckhead Art & Company.
I truly believe that Buckhead Art & Company isn’t like any other gallery. There is something unique about the space and how the artist’s works complement one another. I am honored to be featuring the work of past owner Hutton Snellings, alongside Daniel Maltzman, Bradley Gordon, Rose Masterpol, Carrie Penley, and Richard Webb to name a few.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I have loved watching the women of Buckhead Art & Company support one another. They lift each other up on their social media platforms, include one another, and are able to give their honest opinions to make each other better at the end of the day. Everyone faces challenges, and artists are no exception. It’s a difficult balance between artistic beauty/expression and making a living in it. The artists of BAC are very diverse in style, technique, pricing, and mediums. We hope to offer something for everyone while recognizing that not every piece of art is for every person’s tastes, budget, and style.
