Velma, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My message of resiliency and faith, realized by my personal experiences of “failing forward, fast,” resonates with an audience of emerging entrepreneurs and industry giants alike. Leveraging this connection has been a key driver in my entrepreneurial and consulting victories, highlighted by her achievements working with powerhouse clients such as BET, JIVE Juice Company, Alan “AP” Powell and the University of Phoenix just to name a few.
Velma’s journey to success began in poverty and with traditional education combined with real-world experience. I had three business failures, but I did not give up. I found forward progress building businesses and selling them for profit. I chronicled my life story in my memoir and self-help book “When God Says Go,” published in 2017.
Once established as an industry leader, I devoted myself to helping others achieve the same prosperity and freedom. To that end, I founded Thinkzilla, a high growth experiential marketing, and public relations consultancy specializing in providing nationwide reach to small-to-medium sized businesses and nonprofits through a comprehensive marketing strategy.
I am from Houston, Texas and was recently led by the spirit of God to leave my hometown to start new… I relocated to Atlanta in Feb. 2016… the devil tried to take my life… I had a car crash that should have left me for dead but what I experienced was a spiritual death in order to live my best life now.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road at all… I failed several times and wanted to give up but there is a power greater than myself that continues to inspire me from within making me stronger and stronger by the day. Other struggles I’ve experienced is being betrayed, mocked, persecuted, talked about and lied on. It’s hard, life is hard but I was determined to persevere and not allow myself to be distracted by everything. There was a point I didn’t have anyone but God… it seemed like the world had given up on me. But God had a different plan for my life.

Yes, my Mentor and client Alan “AP” Powell was one of my mentors, I learn a great deal from him. I am blessed to have him in my corner. My Pastor that keeps me covered in prayer Tony Ervin, Nicole Sawyer that gave me a place to stay when I first moved to Atlanta, she believed in me… I don’t know where I would be, had she not allowed my son and I to live with her for the short time we did. My grandmother, Mama Lynn raised me, she has gone to be with the lord but I still feel her prayers and even now, I know she’s smiling and happy with the woman I have become. I love my family and my boys.
