Meet Demetrius W in West Midtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Demetrius W.

Demetrius, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Well, I started like any other photographer. I picked up a camera to join my yearbook team sophomore year. From there, I started self-teaching myself stuff from YouTube. Then, slowly started shooting my friends who were seniors. Back then, I was absolutely horrible but everyone told me to keep with it. I slowly learned all the right terms & controls and started shooting seniors, families, weddings, and fashion. Now, here I am, shooting all across Georgia & other states.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think my road has been fairly smooth. I know everyone has struggled. I feel like my journey has been very positive. I guess my struggles, in the beginning, was finding clients & editing style. I still have trouble finding my perfect style because it’s always changing. Other than those two things in the beginning everything has been smooth. I started to build a client base & name in my town before moving to Atlanta. Now, I’m trying to make a name here in the city.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Demetrius W photo – what should we know?
My company specializes in lifestyle portraits & fashion. From anything like weddings to campaign fashion work. I think I’m most known for my portraits being shot very not the norm. Incorporating weird props or locations for regular everyday photos. I am most proud of my company being very inclusive & pushing positivity in every way.

I think what sets me apart from others is my approach to every shoot/client. I want you to feel like we have been friends for 10 years without meeting me. So from email to shoot day you are comfortable. Then after the shoot is done you feel like we are best friends. I have so many clients that have turned into great friends. Also, my editing style is I think kind of different than the two spectrums seen right now. Its a mix of light & moody with some artsy twist.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think the qualities needed to be successful are drive, patience, and connection. I think drive helps motivate me to keep going no matter what. Seeing other creatives thrive and create gives me drive to do the same.

Patience is definitely needed in this industry waiting for the right client or a big break. I feel like in this industry it’s so fast paced it’s easy to get lost in what others are doing. So, you feel not good enough because you aren’t shooting huge clients or 100 weddings a year.

Lastly, connection with your clients & followers is so important. In the beginning, I was very distant from my followers. I never posted myself or personal things. My Instagram was only client work. Then, I added some personal stuff and gained so many new followers. So, I think keeping a work/life balance is important. Connecting your followers with you.
