Kennedi, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Hello, I am the nine-year-old CEO of K-lock. I created this company to positively affect people through my experiences. My business is unique because it was built from a traumatic experience and now helps to prevent misidentification of kids. My safety lockets will:
• Help prevent misidentification of kids in schools, daycares and on field trips. People should know about this product because more than 800,000 kids go missing every year in the United States. The traumatic event that led me to start my business happened when a lady from child services picked me up from school by misidentification. She was supposed to pick up a girl with the same name but spelled Kennedy, my name is spelled Kennedi. She withdrew me from school and took me far away from school. After she realized it was a mix up and I was returned to my dad, I never wanted to go back to school again. I never wanted that to happen to anyone else. Starting my business helped me cope with that trauma and begin to trust adults again. The lockets that I created for kids have the child’s name, school, and parent’s information. I also have five African American baby dolls that I sell. Their names are Sugar bear, Sarai, Sahara, Safani, and Samya. My story and business have been featured in several publications. My passion is to protect kids and spread knowledge about business ownership.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, the road hasn’t been smooth. One of my biggest struggles was trusting adults again after my incident. I was afraid to even talk to adults at my events. The very 1st time I spoke publicly about my story, I cried. I have progressed a lot since then. I have had two paid speaking events since then and I was a presenter at career day for my school.
Please tell us about K-lock.
My company K-lock is known for my safety lockets. The ‘K’ in K-lock represents my name Kennedi and the Lock is for a locket. I like to say Kennedi’s Lockets. I am most proud of being able to encourage other young girls to live out their dreams and just be themselves. My lockets are different from others because they are stylish and kids will want to wear them, compared to other safety systems.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory was going to Disney world for the 1st time. It was on my birthday which is in November, so everything was decorated with Christmas decorations. It felt so magical, I got to meet all of the disney princess.
