Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise Gober.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started doing hair and makeup almost 10 years ago. I graduated from the Georgia Institute of Cosmetology in Athens GA. I moved to Atlanta in 2009 while working in a salon here in Atlanta and in Athens. In 2011 I opened my first studio. I recently moved to my second studio in the Dunwoody area in 2014. In the salon, I take my behind-the-chair clients where they receive every service you can think of! From cuts, color, extensions etc. I started doing hair and makeup for South Asian weddings about 3 years ago and its been my niche every since. I’ve now expanded my company to DG Hair Artistry Glam Squad. The Glam Squad is a group of licensed and certified hair and makeup artists that show up on location to glam you for any special occasion. We do specialize in South Asian bridal and bridal. I’m so grateful for my team. Bridal life can get a little hectic at times and my girls handle it very well. At this point in my career, I’m also an artistic team member and platform artist for Thermafuse hair products and I’m an educator for Joico as well.
Has it been a smooth road?
Getting to the place that I am today has been long and difficult, yet so rewarding. Opening my first studio in 2011 was a flop and it was difficult for me to close the doors to something I wanted at such a young age. I freelanced for a bit after that, and that was a great learning experience. I felt like it was time for me to take a jump at opening another studio. I took everything I had failed at the first time and did things differently. I made sure that I paid attention to the small things. I am nowhere near where I would like to be, but I stay positive and I learn from my mistakes. I know that one day I will reach my end all goals.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the DG Hair Artistry story. Tell us more about the business.
DG Hair Artistry isn’t just a business. It’s brand for women. When I was a little girl my Grandmother gifted me a jewelry box that had a ballerina inside, she would spin to a beautiful song. The feeling that I got from opening that small jewelry box is the same feeling I want to give women who sit in my chair.
Empowering women is what we stand for. It’s not about me or the Glam Squad. If we can color your hair, or glam you with makeup and after the fact, you feel as though you can take on the world, then that’s what we specialize in. Women from different walks of life, different ages and sizes all want the same thing, to look and feel glamours every day! I’m so proud of the fact that I give my clients a piece of who I am to carry with them forever when they leave the salon. DG Hair Artistry is different from others because I want you to be 100% happy with your look. No matter what it is I want it done exactly the way the client envisions. If any client is ever unhappy or not 100% satisfied they are always welcome to have it corrected.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The beauty industry is forever changing., but we all know that trends just repeat themselves. It’s so amazing to see the trends repeated but tweaked just a bit from each generation. What I’d like to see from my industry is branching out to support one another more. Everyone’s so busy trying to compete with each other. I think it’s an awesome thing when well-known beauty industry leaders come together. It’s inspiring to younger generation hair stylists and makeup artists and to see those before them supporting each other more.
